I have a problem with my sound. All sounds are fine apart from voices - both ATC and the instructors voice.
This has only just started - it was fine when I first loaded the game(which I have only just bought).
I have re-installed it, checked the obvious settings, etc, and I still have the same problem. Sound in other games is fine. It suggests to me there may be a problem with my system, although not being an expert, I wouldn't have a clue where to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Go into Start>Run and type "dxdiag" without the inverted commas.  On the sound tab check that your Hardware Sound Acceleration Level is at least set at basic.

If you can put it up a little do so.  You may lose a few FPS doing this but the voice sounds should be better.

If it is already as maximum I'm not sure what to suggest.

Hmmm, I've tried that, and acceleration was already set at max.
Thanks all the same!

You said you checked the obvious so I trust you went into your sound setting and maxed out the lessons and ATC volume sliders.  Right?

Yes - they are both on, but even when I reinstalled FS, and the sound would be on by default, there was still no ATC or instructor sounds.

If all else fails, might try re installing the Fraunhauser codec in your multimedia devices. This helped solve a few problems for a couple MS games and the FS2000/2002 sim, especially if you updated to DirextX 9 or 9b.

Tho this was suggested by Microsoft and Digital Anvil for their sim Freelancer that had sound problems, maybe this might help you.

Sounds like it might work. At least for me. I have a codec pack installed and it was installed prior to the direct x update. As soon as i can fly out of the office i'll check this and post the result.
Thank you for your support.

I think this is when it becomes obvious that I'm a novice at this sort of thing - are you able to tell me how I would go about reinstalling the Fraunhauser codec?

Remove the Codec: Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Sounds and Audio Devices or Sound and Audio Devices.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click Audio Codes, and then click Properties.
Click the Properties tab.
Click Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec, and then click Remove.
Click Yes to remove the codec, and then restart the computer if you are prompted to restart.
Click OK, and then click OK again.

Remove the Codec: Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click MultiMedia or Sounds and Multimedia.
Click the Devices or Advanced tab.
Expand Audio Compression Codecs.
Click Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec, and then click Properties.
Click Remove. When you are prompted to remove the codec, click Yes.
Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the codec.
If you are prompted, restart your computer.

To reinstall the codec, go to this Microsoft url http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?st=b&na=88&View=en-us&qu=wmfdist...

Or install the latest version of windows media player, which will include the codec.

Oh,, I should correct myself, its Fraunhofer.....silly me. Cheesy

Here is more on the Fraunhofer codec from the knowledge database at Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813345

And here is the article on the sound issues with the Microsoft/Digital Anvil game Freelancer, along with quite a few others. I think here you will find tons of info regarding sound issues.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814549&Product=gms

Here is the one specificaly for Flight Sim 2002 and Pro

Hope this helps.
