Quote:Well I'm finally getting a new computer, i'm tired of poor graphics, speed, etc. I'm looking into getting a Dell and i'm curious as to which graphics card is best to run FS9. There's a choice of the 128MB DDR ATI RADEON 9800 Pro, 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 MX, 128MB DDR GeForce FX 5200. Any input on these are greatly appreciated.
Yup, like Jaffa says, the 9800 is certainly the quickest card in your list, from an image quality point of view, I'd be looking at an FX5950 as an alternative.
The CPU is certainly critical here, you'd be wasting money with an FX5950 or 9800 Ati and a low speed cpu..
I've got the now obsolete FX5600 128mb (about £80) its certainly well upto FS and indeed most other games at maximun settings, when I previously used the same card with an older 1.8ghz p4, I struggled to run any recent games (such as Call of Duty) at Max settings without getting slowdown & stutter....
One new p4 2.6c later, the same card has a whole new lease of life.
I've also got an FX5200 , its installed in the said old p4 1.8, frankly, it compares very favorably with the FX5600
If I were looking for a reasonable card today (which I'm not 'cos my FX5600 is just fine thanks....) currently the Nvidia FX5700 Ultra represents possibly the best value card on the market (not to mention its almost 50% faster than the FX5600 it replaced in most benchmarks....)
As ever, you get what you pay for, just don't expect a £350 FX5950 Ultra to look massively better than a £150 FX5700 Ultra, from what I've seen of these two cards running side by side, theres little difference to my eyes except an extra £200 price hike! which would be better spent on a faster CPU, more RAM or even a force feedback joystick......
Your choice, one thing, whatever card you decide on, make sure its
NOT The GeForce4 MX ! these cards are bargain basement , fine for Quake 3 crap for FS.
