Backround:
I have a P4 1.6A Northwood, which has been known to overclock past 3ghz(with liquid cooling). In BIOS, out of the box, it could be set for 1.7ghz, or 2.1ghz. (100 fsb or 133).
The Saga
I decided to take it farther. After doing my research, I gave it a go. I upped the fsb to 138. Wee it boots at 2.2ghz! Then I went to 145, and upped the voltage to 1.55. It booted again. Having read it could easily attain 2.4ghz, I set it for 153/1.65. It booted to windows and then crashed.
Now I got really scared. I quickly set everything back to 2.1. I thought about it for awhile, and then cautiously went to 143/1.5.
It booted and everything works as normal, running only a wee-bit warmer(44C) at 2.3ghz! 8)
Just got back from playing FS. WOW!
I can hardly beleive the difference. It is like a new computer.
Keep in mind the is just with the basic fan and heatsink.
The Northwood has become a legend in the overclocking community, due to its amazing ability to overclock 50%.
I am not sure what success people have had on here, but this is really nice! I am planning on going to 2.4 next week, when my brother is home to supervise!
Just my tale...
