Most graphics editors will do. It really depends on your skill in using them. M$ Paint is not ideal for repainting textures. Try Pixia posted in the Utilities section here or PhotoPlus 5.5
http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/serif/ph/ph5/index.asp?ref=http://www.google.co...
Both excellent freeware programs.

Get the demo that is free.
When it runs out just roll the clock on your comp back a year and use it again. Don't forget to set it back though.
My system:
Intel Q6600@3.6GHz, Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2-6400 (4-4-4-12-1T) , Sapphire 7850 OC 2BG 920/5000, X-Fi Fatality, Corsair AX 750, 7 Pro x64

Paintshop Pro is definitely the way to go. (Unless you're feeling like dropping the cash for Photoshop. lol)
You've just gotta have layers. It makes life so much easier!

Which ones better? Adobe Photoshop is for the simple reason of the shear volume of plug-in filters which are available. However Paint Shop Pro is an exellent program also (I own both). If the main thing you want to do is model re-painting and basic photo editing, then go for Paint Shop Pro for the simple reason it is cheaper.

"Most" Photoshop plug-ins will work with Paint Shop Pro 8.
Search the computer graphics magazines, because from time to time they have included PSP5.0 - full version - as a teaser to get you to upgrade to PSP7/8.

Of the two freeware programs I mentioned, Photoplus 5.5 is more like PSP. The user interface is very similar. I've not used Adobe Photoshop but I think Pixia is more based on that. Both have similar advanced features like Layers.
There is no trial version of FSDS, possibly for the reason mentioned. Nobody in their right mind would post a fully-functional free trial of their commercial software if it can be abused.

I wouldn't abandon MS Paint completely as it has a very useful curve function that I use often on the nose of aircraft before finishing off my paint job by switching over to the more sophisticated Photoshop.

Taffy.
Taffy - you DO realize you're giving away a TOP SECRET of the Trade?
Many of us, while primarily using one program over another, will frequently "switch" to use a particular tool that one has over another.
You can say that "Paint Shop Pro and DXTBMP are all you'll ever need", but gee, then you see that MSPaint has this widget, and pixia has this other, but Corel Draw/PHotopaint 3 has this ... and then ...

I gotta agree with you, Felix
I normally switch between MS Paint, PSP and Pixia

You guys must be experts. I prefer to stick to one program if at all possible. I can't see the point of messing around learning how to use alternatives. PSP7 suits me & does all I could ever want + plenty more besides. Been using it for years & still find new features every time I fire it up. I'm sure PSP8 has even more features.

I will admit that while having both PSP7 and PSP8 on my system, I do most of my painting in PSP7. However, the straightening tool in PSP8 is helpful, and pixia has a "tornado" effect that mixes/jumbles the pixels, sort of a brushed on noise effect, that reminds me of a similar tool that MacPaint had - when I used Macs back in 88-90
The vector drawing tools in Corel Draw are more powerful, I feel, than in PSP, and of course, I use Abacus FS Repaint to deal with alpha channels and detail touch ups.

I don't use Pixia & have no knowledge of it. As I mentioned earlier, Photoshop 5.5 is more like PSP. [url]http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/serif/ph/ph5/index.asp?ref=http://www.g oogle.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=photoplus5&SP=

As with most things it's a matter of preference. I always advise anyone to try all available alternatives until they find the one that suits them.

Hehe, Hagar, PSP 8 has one feature that I'd buy it for (and did) alone....layer GROUPS!
It has made my life, as a certified layer junkie, much less hectic.
In the pics below, you can see that I have arranged my layers into right and left groups.
I can collapse/expand each group as necessary, and of course turn them off/on as required.
Here is the right layer group expanded. It is a pretty trimmed down layer set, and I'm doing much better since the therepy and the LAA group meetings have helped a lot, showing me that there are others in the world like me!
(LAA...Layer Abusers Anonymous)
PSP8 has a lot more features I've come to like, but PSP7 will always have a special place in my heart, since its the one I learned on. (and its more streamlined than 8, so I still use it as my editor in DXTBMP, which works out very well).
And I totally agree on your philosophy of getting used to and using one program. Its hard enough to learn all the features of one, let alone several, and I've found that in most cases where I thought my main paint program did not do a feature I needed, it was just my ignorance about the product.
This is not to say I'm totally opposed to using whatever program has the features you need, I just like to keep it simply whenever possible.
Heck, I can guarantee that I have not even explored 30% of the features on PSP8, but what I have learned of the features I do know, its the best program out there to do repaints...at least for me. (again, it really goes back to what you're used to using, but if you are just starting out and are looking for a good repainting program, PSP is the best for the price/performance ratio, in my opinion)

I also went on a search for a freebie painter....tried dozens and ended up using Image Forge quite a bit. I will give PSP 8 demo a shot though as it's about time I bought a paint application.
