Hiya

Ive had windows 2000 for about a year now and its been fine untill a few weeks ago, my problems: If an item is on the desktop i cannot drag it into a folder or even around the desktop, the only time i can is if i have just restarted my computer! I cannot click on some links, so say one of you guys post a picture on the forum and the file size is too big i cannot click on the link! Also come icons dont even show up, like im typeing this now and no emoticon tabs have shown up nor any of the hyperlink buttons ect. Some websites do not load up, i can get onto  hotmail only when (as above) i have just restarted my computer also this sometimes happens here. I cannot use copy and paste at all! some things on windows dont open like if i click on the 'search' tab on nthe desktop it wont open! also sometimes if i open windows explorer the program files dont show up! Help needed and fast please! Thanks in advance!

Ahhh no! After all that my computers back to normal!

I downloaded a virus scanner and ad-aware 6 and got rid of EVERYTHING bad on my drives, i had 100 virus's and over 450 bits of spyware! Both programs are fully updated and have been set to check every 12 hours plus if im on I usally run both a couple of time. now nothing works again. It was fine for about a day after everything was installed and scanned and now its back to normal should I contact microsoft or is there another solution for it? Many thanks again

Update dat files.
Run a/v and then spyware.
Result?
Firewall enabled?
Still looks like virus/spyware.

Clean and protected and still system problems?

Download HDD Utility from mfgr to test.  Each mfgr has one.  Exe to a formatted floppy.  Boot to floppy and run TEST. Not zero out of HDD which is an option.  Test Quick and Advanced. If ok, problem is OS.

Try a System Restore to earlier date (XP reference) You may need to reinstall some patches.

Still unstable and clean a/v or spyware, reinstall OS as an Upgrade and not new install.  Backup created files prior.  Better yet, Upgrade install XP.  Better OS.  If full install, apps and data will be lost.  Upgrade only.

Try deleting all Cookies, Temp Internet Files and Temp files also.
Another suggestion is to look at the Windows\Prefetch folder.  If more than one screen or many screens the contents can be eliminated one at a time if not used or delete all (but not the folder).  Prefetch is created by Windows for each app to speed up the loading process. And it will create new.  I've done the entire file contents.  Cold boot twice to start it creating prefetch files.

My system is XP and I'm not familiar with Y2K.  System Restore is one of XP's strong attributes and made easy to see and use.  I do recall that 98 had a registry restore so Y2K will have some procedure for picking an earlier OK system date and installing.

you did the best thing.

You should always be running a virus hunter on your system. I use AVG and its free, does very good work, and did i mention its FREE !  Grin

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

And when the pesky popups pop me I use addaware 6 , and its Free too  Roll Eyes

http://www.addaware.biz/

both of these programs are my chainsaw of protection
