I doubt this has happened to anyone.... But anyways,l today i went to start up CFS3 so i put the cd in the disk drive and started it up. Then about a second later i hear a LOUD pop sound... At first i thought i dropped something, but then to my horror i realized that the sound had come from my computer... Embarrassed  So im trying to figgure out what had happened when the "no cd in drive E" message popped up so puting 2 and 2 together I look down at my cd drive and to my complete horror the front panel to my cd drive is hanging askew and the cd tray has one corner sticking out.  Shocked Shocked  it looked as if a small bomb had detonated inside of the drive... Embarrassed  So i mannaged to pull open the tray and discover that CFS3 disk 2 is now CFS3 disk pieces... millions of pieces Cry

Now maybe having a $40 game destroyed is bad... but whats worse is it took my $70 cd drive with it....
all my cd drive does now is give a soft whine but nothing more Embarrassed

I think what caused it was a small crack in the cd which weakened it and allowed it to shatter at the high RPMs...

Well anyways thats my sad story of the day Cry Cry

moral to the story: treat a cd badly and it treats you worse... with a cheap blow to the wallet Embarrassed

I had a similar thing happen with a drive at work a few years ago. Disc broke in half but did not trash the drive.

It may need some refinement but perhaps we could turn that into a new effects mod. Realistic flak explosions at last  Grin.

Just out of curiosity was Ozzy playing on the same server?

Was there a distinct odor of Marmalade in the air?

The discovery Channel show "Myth Busters" ran an episode which covered the "Explosive CD" effect. They put many CDs through punishing conditions to see if todays high speed CD Rom Drives would cause them to shatter into millions of pieces. They even went so far as to place a gelatin Dummy in close proximity to the un-shrouded CD rom. (It was just spinning with no computer around it) and the shards of CD looked like shrapnel which embedded aproximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch into the simulated skin.

Many of the CDs which went through the punishing tests (Thrown to the ground, left in the sun, and even placed into the microwave) held up to the high RPM but a few of the CDs wobbled within the drive and began to flex and suddenly exploded into thousands of tiny pieces! the super slow motion shots were great of this event.

The myth buster crew concluded that given all of their testing, the "Myth" of exploding CDs was FACT and that the odds of it ever occuring are one in millions!

You seem very un-lucky - dont leave the house haha. Sorry about your CD rom that sucks big time!!!

P.S. has anyone ever placed a CD in the microwave?? the effect is pretty cool, place an unwanted CD into the microwave and turn it on high for about 3 to 5 seconds. and watch the action! (3 to 5 seconds striuctly!)

Denishc you expect Bill Gates to refund Mustang???

I mean come on, lets get real here the Contract in the cd probably contains the phrase "USE AT YOUR OWN RISK, MICROSOFT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES CAUSED BY THE GAME TO YOU OR YOUR HARDWARE, IF YOUR COMPUTER DOES GET DESTORYED THEN PLEASE BY ANOTHER ONE FROM THE MICROSOFT WEBSITE"
I'm not spamming or anything like that but thats how greedy they are, they failed to exchange my defective copy XP upgrade couple of years back. (and it didn't even come with a installition manual. Angry Angry Angry Angry

Welcome to the world of high speed cd rom drives!

My MSI CD/RW warns not to write @ 52xspeed with "unbranded" disks, these tend to shatter at high rpm apparently!

Me thinks M$ uses cheapo disks!  Grin

I'm glad I use CD patches........

I thought shattering disks in drives was a load of pap, apparently, I'm wrong!  Roll Eyes

Ouch, bad luck.

Talking of bad luck, not long ago my fs 2002 disk suddenly developed a tiny crack (I treat my disks very well) which appeared out of nowhere.

This was really bad luck because at the time I was having probs with my FS and had to re-install.

The crack was from the inside and soon after some desperate attempts to squeeze anything from it, the crack was so long that the disk didnt want to spin anymore (luckily as it now seems from reading this).

So I just popped down to my local game shop and exchanged it. (I keep receipts for ages)

Microsoft would just blame you for the fact that the disc must be damaged somehow. Maby if you spent loads of money on a big lawsuit with adequate testing, you might get your $70 back.

Me thinks that your CD had a crack in it. If there is a crack in the CD going out from the middle hole then NEVER use it again as there is a huge risk of it shattering into millions of little pieces. Its not a myth, if you use cracked CDs then its going to happen sometime.

I have a regular CD-rom drive and a CD-RW drive. I was surprised to see that I am able to use the RW as a regular drive.

Therefore, if any of my CDs ever explode and destroy one of my drives, I will still have one drive left over.

Right now, NONE of my CDs are cracked. They're ok.

Right now, my regular drive is making some wierd noises as I use it. So right now, I'm just using my RW drive in case my regular one EXPLODES instead of the CD. Roll Eyes

I should have said this earlier, but I never knew that exploding CDs existed. Thanks for the warning.

If you use the appropriate No-CD patch, as I have always done, there is no risk of this happening - unless you need to reinstall the sim. In this case, always examine the CD carefully before inserting it into the drive.
