Hi All... Grin...!
Fozzers problem No.2... Roll Eyes...!

1: I have a new Gigabyte GA-7 VT 600L, 400 FSB, Socket A Motherboard.
2: A new Socket A, Athlon XP 2600 MMX, (2.1 gig), processor fitted with an "Arctic Cooler" Copper Silent TG heat sink and silent fan.
The latest Gigabyte motherboard drivers are installed, and the Bios is up-to-date.
The motherboard should auto-detect the processor fitted, during boot-up.

Now comes the problem... Cry...!

Nine times out of ten when I boot up, it indicates that the processor is an Athlon XP 2000 MMX, (1.7 gig), type rather than the correct one, Athlon XP 2600 MMX, (2.1 gig).
If I am lucky, the 10th. time of booting up it will indicate a 2600 processor...

The difference in speed is noticible when running FS 2004...!

Has anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening...?

Cheers all... Grin!

Paul.

P.S.  I bet the silence will be deafening... Roll Eyes...!
...surprise me... Wink...!
LOL...!

have you checked the bios settings or the settings in the hardware profiles? making sure to delete or turn off the other one, if thats even possible

Hmm,

1'st check all the mobo screws are secure so you've not got an earthing issue (I've had plenty building pc's!) - with similar erratic and occasional faults.

Possibly a heat issue, your board may be underclocking the cpu due to overheat.

I'm 99% Sure this is a BIOS issue paul, something isn't right.

Keep trying various settings, I found my AGP was forced onto 1x which caused me a bit of grief, also,I can easily make my cpu (2.6ghz) run at 1.3ghz with 1 wrong setting posts @2.6ghz then reports 1.3ghz under 3D Mark with a silly score.....

Alas, I'm no expert on BIOSes (If only!) about two weeks of buggerin about has finally seen my pc leap into life (well it was'nt exactly dead before, just dead ish...)

There you go, about as much help as a chocolate teacup probably, but it works ,of a sort, for me!  Wink

Hi Craig... Grin...!
I think I see what you are getting at, but I actually only have one processor.
It's just that when I boot up, the system reports the wrong size processor...(a 2000 instead of 2600)...1.7 Gig instead of 2.1 Gig Cry...!
..and therefore the system runs at the slower speed... Roll Eyes...!
The processor details appear on the boot-up screen and also in "dxdiag".
Something, somewhere, is not sensing the correct size processor... Cry...!

Cheers mate... Grin...!

I think your Bios settings are wrong.

The XP2600+ CPU runs on a 166mhz Front Side Bus speed and uses a CPU multiplier of 12.5 to give the 2.1ghz speed.

My first thought is that your FSB speed is currently incorrectly set to 133mhz.

So..... It's a matter of making sure your FSB speed is set to 166mhz and your CPU multiplier is set to 12.5.  (these will probably be covered in seperate pages of the bios settings.)

If they are set to DEFAULT, change to manual or "expert" settings and set them manually, then save the bios , reboot and you should see it boot as a 2600.

Many new m/boards have BIOS errors in the first months of production, so it might be a bios flaw thats not letting the CPU detect properly at default settings.

Another thing...... maybe the bios is set for FAILSAFE defaults or similar and it's purposely running slower, therefore incorrectly stating the CPU.

note: check to see if the CPU vcore voltage is correctly set as well. My XP2600+ cpu has a vcore voltage of 1.6v, but I sometimes run it at 1.65v with no probs. Make sure you find the correct voltage specification!
