Ok. Ivwe made my plane and i want to check that it looks ok in FS9. I havent named everythink correctly yet and there are no animations. Does this matter? Anyway i exported it as an .X using the pandasoft directx exproter for 3ds max 6 BETA. Then i used makemdl on the .x file and it crashed with an error. This is the log file :

Shorten the output file name, use no spaces or special characters in the name.

the output file has no spaces of anything in it. Just says "model.mdl"

it could be that the x file produced by the 3DS6 exporter is somehow NOT compatible with the current makemdl.exe
Also, I'd check that setting of "1024units/meter" ??? aren't the recommended gmax system units 1unit=1meter?
Also, if you've modelled in 3DSMax 6, wouldn't it be slightly easier to export the model as a 3DS file into gmax and export it from there?
Does the 3DS format exported from 3DS Max export the texture mappings and animations?

I export from 3dsm4 > X > makemdl >FS without any problems using the PandaSoft export plugin. The only problem I have ever had is that if there are colocated or coliner verts in a part, the part is not named as when you go from gWax. This usually only happens from meshes that were poorly created by another applictation. But checking the "Ignore Warnings" box in makemdl will override that and compile anyway.

You could try removing spaces not only from the output file name, but also from input/output
directory
names.
