I am about to make a flight over Antarctica, with several landings on ice or snow. Does anybody have any good suggestions on which plane to do it in? I want something big, something that the military would use. I thought of the C-130, but do I need skis? What about a C-5 over antarctica? possible?

I have a suggestion...
Don't even try!

M$ didn't exactly make that part of the virtual world a friendly place to fly.

If you stay near the coastline, and don't head to far south, you'll be allright.  Since the FS world is based on a cylinder instead of a sphere or ovoid, flying near the south pole is extremely tricky and  does some strange things.  People have reported all sorts of things, such as crashing to the desktop and freezing.  Even getting magically whisked away to another part of the world when they crash.

But if you still want to do it, you can download a large number of Antarctica airports on several different sites.

A good aircraft for this would be something like the V-22, as it can land almost vertically and is very easy to control.

As far as I know, Antarctica has absolutely no airports in the default scenery.  So you might want to really think about getting an addon.  I would by no means change your itinerary, but I would suggest you skirt the coast and not head into the interior.

I forgot to ask: what sim are you using?

Sim as in what version right? FS2004 all the way!!! there are a few airports in the default senery (spelling?), like 5 or 6 US Airbases. But you are right, they are all at the coast, and the only base in the world that call be call this, the South Pole base, does not even exist (NZSP). Here is a link of all the US Bases:

http://www.pakaviation.com/PVA/Library/World_Airport_Data/airports.php?C=AY

Yes, i know the address might be a bit weird (Pakistan), but it gives the data nonetheless.

Can anybody suggest a good addon for the Antarctic scenery? I would like one that include a south pole base (if possible), but I would still take ANY suggestions!

Thanks

There is a scenery out there for this, i believe it is at this site and is for FS2k2. I do not know if it will work for FS9. Some 2k2 do and some don't.

You should look for
ata2k2_a
ant02
anta2k2

Try those and see how you get on.
I'm at ANTA at the moment and hope that stuff will work in FS9 for you Smiley

The other thing I forgot to say was you cannot overfly the pole.

Due to FS design if I remember you will only get to about 80S and the program will divert you

Cheers

AND another thing(I only do this to build up my post tally-nothing to do with being brain dead)Kenn Borek Air has been involved in a couple of rescue missions into Antarctica flying deHavilland Twin Otters down from Canada and using Rothera as a jumping off place to the pole. SO if you want to do the thing I believe you can download a Kenn Borek Air Twin Otter here at Simv and fly the Antarctic to your hearts content(apart from the Pole!)

Cheers
