some planes, for instance the AIA 737 paintkit, can be painted, but they just appear white. Does anyone know why, and how to fix it?

Wihtout having looked at the paintkit - when you save your finished texture in the texture folder, what format are you saving the modified texture? if you're saving as a 24-bit bitmap (which is what most programs default to) then FS will not recognize the texture.
For starters, save a copy as a straight 8-bit bitmap and recheck.

Not sure if I'm reading this right.
I think most paint kits have blank textures. They will have no markings & might well appear white in the sim until you paint them yourself.

No, I did paint my VA's colours on first!
I'll try and save the filetype differently, I just overwrote the blank textures.
