I am having a heck of a time getting them to look right

My general thought is to simply downshift the brightness 75%.  I am using Paint Shop Pro, so this may not work for you, but try it out, see if it fits . . .

yeah same here thats about the best tutorial your gonna get... also whack some spot lights on for the tail and window lights if possible .. all add to effect
