I did the same, went out and bought CFS3 because I was so impressed with FS9 I thought it must be as good at least.
Boy did i get taken for a ride!!
I spent a whole Saturday messing with it first telling me my computer couldn't run it etc. (yes my computer is well above the mims) and tweaking and everyting else and it just sucks!!
I know that even though I have never flew in a Mustang that they don't handle like that!!
The grapics suck, even after upgrading my ram and video card.
I just got sick of trying to set it up to run halfway decent on my machine I removed it and put it on the shelf.
I have yet to try IL2 but belive I'm going to buy it this weekend. I think if you read what is here and at other forums you'll see that it is the one to get.
I never tried CFS2 so I can't comment on it but I'm debating buying it just because of my experiance with CFS3!!
Until then I'll enjoy flying my warbirds in FS9.

I've spent £££'s upgrading my pc from a lowly pIII to what I have now to play CFS3, all I've gained is a great CFS2 experience!

What?  Shocked you hav'nt bought CFS2 yet? Go fetch boy !!!!!  Grin  Wink

Well, you can try the demo version of IL-2. It's free. It has less quality because DUHHH it's a demo. Roll Eyes

CFS3 cost around $50-$60 even after all that time that past. IL-2: FB costs around $25-$30. If it doesn't work for you, then at least you never spent $60 on it.

You WILL need to download the latest patches for IL-2 ONLY if you are interested in playing online. If you are not interested [unlikely], then you don't need the patches at all.

There are 3 patches for it:

1. one patch updates the out-of-the-box version [v1.0] to version 1.11
2. another patch then updates v1.11 to v1.21

Both patches are moderately large [ranging from 40-90MB]

3. The third one just simply updates the out-of-the-box version to a version 1.21. However, is a huge file. 120MB

So, you're better off updating little by little.

But the updates are worth it because they fix certain bugs in IL-2: FB. However, I never notice any bugs.

Man, I'm a bad pilot. I can't survive a take-off without getting strafed at by a Bf-109 or being bombed to pieces by a He-111. Embarrassed

Looks like I have two games to get!
Anyone want to trade CFS2 & IL2 for a CFS3 (hardly used,mint!)?
4_Series_Scania:  Has Space Ace seen the pic of Gene flying?
That is cool, imagine that look on the enemy if the pilots looked like that!!
I'm definately heading out to get these!!!!
I'll use the CFS3 disc's for coasters, of course they are probably worthless for that usage too!!

Hey fretnstuff,

Have you noticed that strange-looking plane on the first pic that I posted? It's not an addon and it's NOT fictional. The Germans really did build it. It's actually 2 He-111 connected together by the center wing.

Stay away from those planes [if you get the game] because, if you try to shoot them, you'll be out-gunned by the large number of gunners that the plane has.

My favorate low-wing fighters are the LaGG's. They are very stable and are good enough to shoot down most enemies. After take-off, climb to over 200-300meters. Then apply forward-pressure on the stick. Once you have reached above 330-350 km/h, you are ready to fight.

Never fly the Me-262 because its engines are hard to manage. If you ever do wanna fly it, then listen. Never jerk the throttle, just apply it slowly. Otherwise, the engines will go on fire.

Ah yes, the twin He111. It was one of my favorite targets when I played IL2. The huge amounts of guns on board don't mean a thing. Because due to the hyper-realistic weapons ballistics and stuff, you can blow a plane out of the air with three rounds from two miles away! And i'm not kidding. Just zoom in a little and aim carefully. Then give the trigger a quick squeeze.  Tongue

I don't know about you, but my shots are sluggish. Even if I zoom in, my shots are still sluggish.

As for 2 shots destroying a plane like that, that's not possible in IL-2. Unless, of course, you are flying the Ju-87 Stuka that has those HUGE ANTI-TANK cannons under its wings. 2 shots from that and you're done. Wink

I do not want to see that plane behind me. Embarrassed
