Yes, I am ashamed to admit it, but I don't know.  Does anyone know the details of the first recorded dogfight?

Most early WWI aircraft were 2-seaters used for observation & artillery spotting. I've read of many instances of skirmishes with nothing more than a hand-held pistol. I found this interesting article here. http://www.firstworldwar.com/airwar/summary.htm
From the use of the word airplane (not aeroplane) it was written by an American. It doesn't give details of the first actual dogfight but this appears to be the first recorded kill.

By October of 1914 many pilots were experimenting with machine guns.  Louis Strange improvised a safety strap allowing the observer of his tractor driven Avro 504 to "stand up and fire all round over top of plane and behind".  On the 5th of October 1914 a French Voisin III two-seater pusher biplane became the first plane to shoot down another when it encountered an Aviatik B.1.  The shots were fired by the observer who stood up in order to fire a Hotchkiss machine gun.

I assume you meant WWI?

On 21 Sep 1914, two German aviators flew a reconnaissance mission carrying ther pet schnauzers as a lark.  Unfortunately, the schnauzers got a but rowdy, shall we say, and got into a fight.  Fortunately the oberver was able to restrain each, although at a cost of seriously scratched boots and pants, and the airplane's fabric was also found with appropriate rips.

Lt. Willi Becker, observer and plane captain, was seen berating the pilot, a Sgt. Luddecker, as responsible for the attacking pet.

The event was detailed in the diary of the flight's squadron executive officer, a Major Oswald Hagar-Daly

That's what Inspector Poly said...
