Has anyone tried running FS 2004 designed scenery with 2002 yet?  I'm interested in knowing because I just read a press release on FS.com and avsim.com about high resolution scenery of KRDG, Reading, PA to be released 12/25 as a gift from the MAAM design team and I'd love to have it being a Pennsylvania native. Thanks guys.

Apparently the 2k4 scenery (default at any rate) won't work in 2k2. I don't know about the add-ons....

See the scenery design forum (New SDK Released)

It's because the fs9 scenery is being created using a new XML standard.

This is from the Intro to the new SDK.

A new, XML-based, scenery format has been created and is required for creating new scenery.  Scenery should no longer be created with BGL opcodes or the BGLC compiler from previous versions of Flight Simulator.  The older BGL opcodes are supported for backward compatibility, however, we cannot guarantee their support in future releases.

So new scenery elements containing opcodes that are not recognised by 2002 will not display correctly. Also scenery elements that use old opcodes that have not been carried forward (eg compiled with old SCASM versions) may not in 2004 either.

Everything keeps a-changing folks! It's the price of progress (greater realism, higher performance).

Many old members will recall I was one of the gang of old stalwarts who was adamant that I'd not get 2004 but would stick with 2002 until 2006 came out.

I was wrong. The innovations and developments incorporated into fs9 make the trade-up fully justifiable - and I'm amazed out how quickly utilities like AFCAD, TTools, PAI etc not only caught up with what they were doing in 2002 but have accelerated past at great speed and have even more functionality in fs9!

I miss one or two of my 2002 aircraft (eg 707s) but they will appear in fs9 sooner ot later. I've also got almost all of the 'old' panels I wanted to retain converted for fs9 or downloaded new, better ones. I rarely if ever fire my 2002 up now.

???

Hmmmmm

Yes and no

Would you even think of using an old FS98 non-animated, 6-sided fuselage plane now in 2002 or 2004?

I won't hold my breath waiting for an answer Wink

I don't think that your loverly Meljet will work in FS98 - but let me know if you care!

Same goes for all the things that make you like 2002 so much - ATC, AI, more realistic scenery. You can't put em into FS98 but you still sleep easy o' nights  Smiley

It's called new technology - it's the engine of change!

I keep experimenting to see what goes and what doesn't. Unfortunately some scenery I do want doesn't work in FS2002.

My intention also was to wait but my resolve is crumbling!!  RATS Roll Eyes

You might already know this but I though it worth mentioning. It is possible to use the FS9 default textures in FS2002. There's a tute out there somewhere. The link was posted in this forum not so long ago. I tried it following the instructions & to my surprise it worked fine. Some said it improved their frame rates too. Not sure if this is any help.

FS 04 will have to wait for a couple of weeks although I'm happy to say that because my wife is taking an on-line from a local community college she now has finally agreed to let me trade our old p-3 800 up to a 2.2 ghz athlon xp.  Once I have that in place I will round up all the old gaming software i don't use including FS 2000 and take em to electronics boutique down at the mall and trade em over toward FS 09. The reason I haven't done so yet is because i know that the extras of FS09 over 2002 require a bit more from the processor my processor often has it's fill running 2002. Why get something cool and neat if I have to keep the sliders down to use it?
