Actually Craig a number of German officers and soldiers were executed for refusing to follow such an order. Their courage shines out as an example to many others who lacked their morals.
Believe me we in Britain are no better. I mean we invented the concentration camp (Boer War), and little jollies like barbed wire, machine guns etc.
Having watched the destruction of Yugoslavia, and having friends from all sides in that little collection of wars I have to say that many people are pushed unknowingly into these situations. I feel this man should stand trial, and if he is truely innocent, a victim of circumstance then yes he should be freed. However if he is guilty of crimes he should be punished. That is the law of any civilised country.

Ooops sorry Woodie. Small brain malfunction there, been PM'ing Craig all evening and the grey matter flipped.
'Fraid to say your history book may not be all that accurate (hardly a first with school books huh?).

In a small aside, didn't Rommell refuse orders to shoot Jewish prisoners?

He also aided and abetted in helping several SAS and LRDG prisoners escape from hospital before the Gestapo could get them, in direct contravention of Hitlers Commando Order.
A damn fine gentleman, as well as a superbly talented general (and that from someone on 'the other side'
)

What else can you say about a guy who is on the losing side of the greatest war in history but is still remembered as one of the greatest generals in history? The only other person I can think of who did that is Robert E. Lee in our Civil War...

Oh I don't know Scorpion, I've been re-reading Mr Reids Colditz (he was the escape officer there for a couple of years!), and I love the fact that he accepts being caught as part of the game, and the fact that the prison guards were delighted when the Gestapo came to show them how to do an inspection and lost all their keys along with a number of articles of clothing etc. And the minute they left all the keys (and some of the clothing) was returned by the prisoners

My stance is aimed more towards the "official" kind of reporting, not first hand accounts. I would like to say a lot of veterans, if not most, are less biased than than any report or "informative" textbook.

I feel I need to re-state my previous post. The SS were all volunteers. Eichman created the Deathshead (Totenkopf) formations. These were an elite within the elite of the SS and were selective. The Totenkopf formations were those responsible for the guarding of the camps and the liquidation of Warsaw. The Waffen SS were the fighting divisions that were employed alongside the Whermacht and had more "regular" duties.
I have checked my sources and discovered/remembered that the SS were never actually part of the armed forces. They were a "Party" army. This is not intended to deny history but to explain why men were not conscripted to the SS. It cannot and did not happen.
This man, if it is proven that he was a member of the SS, is responsible in part for the deaths of several million Jews, Russian POW's, Gypsies, Homosexuals, Catholic Priests, Lutheran Priests, Political undesirables, criminals and allied spies.
I will accept that a young man growing up in Germany in the thirties may have been lead to believe that Nazism was right and good. He may well regret his actions now but that does not deny his responsibility or the need for trying him. If indeed he is so very regretful and sorry why has he been on the run for so many years? Surely he would welcome the chance to apologise to the people he harmed after the guilty verdict has been read to him.
