Very nice shots.

But wondering around the forum last days, i keep wondering: HOW MANY SPITFIRES ARE THERE?

Not that i don't like em, but they keep popping up like mushrooms on a damp autum morning  Grin

How come so many of you are specialized in them?

Because all arguing about performance aside (I actually think the Mustang was superior) the Spitfire is the most beasutiful plane ever built - bar none.  Cheesy

As for how many there are, I would say about twenty decent models out there with dozens of repaints.  Ozzy might have a better idea about this...

The other main difference with the Typhoon and Tempest is the wing. The Typhoon had a much thicker wing and was not very good at getting out of the way of a Fw190 with a hangover. The Tempest was much thinner and much better at dogfighting if it needed to.
I actually shot down more german fighters in CFS3 in a Tempest then i did in the P-51D

IMHO  If you have seen a Spitfire, and flown one, at least in the virtual sense, and still have to ask that question, then no amount of recounting (The Spitfire Gospels) will ever explain the alure they have on some of us.  Part of it, at least for me, is that Spitfires and Hurricanes, were just as much a part of the "Few" that Winston Churchill spoke of after the Battle of Britain, as the pilots that flew them. You'll notice that in plan view the Tempest's wing is similar in shape to that of the Fury/Sea Fury, although slightly larger...

The Tiffy and the Tempest are two very differet aircraft. Big thick wing and falling off tail are just a couple of things. Both had a Napier Saber H-Block 24 cylinder engine fitted (Tempest 2 had a Bristol Centaurus Radial). The Tiffy was a bit of a let down in it's intended roll as a replacement for the Hurricane, but went on to be a ground attack aircraft of the highest order. The Tempest was a fast interceptor and shot down many V-1's.

In reality there were 47 variations of the Spitfire/Seafire although many of these were prototypes that did not go into production.
I honestly don't know what it is about the Spitfire that fires my imagination so much. I just know that no other aircraft has ever had such an impact upon me. I see many real Spitfires every year and every single time I see one or hear the sound of that Merlin or Griffon engine, I just get goose bumps. Pure magic! Smiley

Anyhow, nice shots again Fido pal. Glad you found a Tiffy and fixed those holes in your Tempest Wink
Loads of great Sea Furies about at the moment. A couple are here at SimV but there are a load more at "No Noads."
The only Fury I can think of (land based version of the Sea Fury) is an FSDS version of the third Fury prototype with a Sabre enging rather than the Centaurus. I'd post you a shot but my CFS2 installs have gone up the spout!

Those of you lucky buggers in the USA who can get to Florida will be able to see a Tempest V in the air soon, Kermit Weeks has one that is near on finished.

I have read the Napier Sabre engine was one that had a very distinctive sound (a howl), but a heap of "grunt".

As for CFS3, if i go tank busting, i Take a Typhoon anyday, the 4x 20mm guns packs a bigger whalloping than the 8x 0.5in Cal Brownings of the P-47.......

Hawker Tempest   Thanks for the info on the Sea Furys, I will start my search tomorrow. I just realized, when I put on my headphones for the first time in days, that neither my Tempest nor Typhoon had any sound, Shocked  Roll Eyes  so I will spend the evening try to find a good sound file for them. I looked at both the Tempest and Typhoon from above and finally noticed the huge difference in in wing shape, the thickness had not been apparent at first look.  Never notice the difference in the tail sections, I'd like to blame it on the camo, but more likely I'm just not as observent as I used to be.

Fido pal, there is a Napier Sabre sound set out there, but it sounds like an old two stroke motor bike! I use a Griffon sound set with my Tiffy and Tempest. Not quite authentic, but sounds nice Wink

Not heared an update on this project for quite some time now. Last I knew it was an on going rebuild with no time frame.
Tempest Two Ltd in Notts, England are almost done with a Tempest II rebuild and I would hope to see this flying within the year.

Hawker  I wish I had read your post before I installed my sound, I tried everything including resetting the bass on my sound card, trying to get the engine to sound like something more than your typical garden tractor.
On the subject of sound, does any one know if there is a way to listen to music and still hear all the aircraft noises, I would like to listen to 40's era WWII songs ,in the background, while flying some of my War Birds.

Unfortunately, I've never heard a Napier Sabre nor ever likely to. I find aliasing the Tempest Sound.cfg to the DH Comet gives a very satisfying noise.

I never run other applications while using the sims. They're far too much of a resource hog on my poor old rig. I often wonder if using WinAmp & other such programs is the reason for people complaining of jitters & other problems with FS2002/4. If I want to listen to music, which I usually do all the time I'm using the PC, I have a nice hi-fi system & tuner. 8)

Crew Chief's report 25/11/03 - Hawker Tempest V s/n NV994 JF-E. Canopy checked & found serviceable. Air tested over Shoreham. All satisfactory. Sign here.
Comments: Must be the pilot. Tongue

...

Fido. I don't know what's wrong with your canopy. Mine works as advertised. I suspect it's a missing or corrupt entry in Aircraft.cfg.
