all I can say is I dislike guns.

My father bought me one a few years ago as a gift. I went through gun handling and cleaning classes, went to the shooting range once, and gave it back to him.

I have no thrill from shooing a gun. Now a camera is a different story. LOVE shooting with a camera.

Regarding that town, the majority of them probably have outhouses for toilets and have more vehicles on blocks then they do illegitimate children running round

My life is like the movie Office Space

Gun laws......gun laws.......gun laws.......

You'll never be able to please everyone. Never...........

It's a very touchy subject, whether you're in a country such as the US, where there is an inherent right written into the Constitution, for a person to bear arms or your in a country like Britain, where guns in the home are vitually unheard of, except for hunting rifles etc.

There is a middle ground too. Australia has no inherent Constitutional right (although we do have a Constitution). Most states (and the laws vary greatly) have regulations which allow rifles for hunting and sporting purposes and handguns for Security and sporting purposes. Automatic and semi-automatic rifles were banned in all States in 1998, after an especially nasty incident in Tasmania called the "Port Arthur Massacre" in which auto weapons were used by one nut to kill 30 odd people. Sad

Anyway, I have 1 (one) single handgun, which I use for Security work (occasionally, even tho' I am disabled to a degree). I have just received a directive from the NSW Police Commisioner that states I now have to install a "back to base" monitored alarm system, which includes a sensor switch on the safe door.  Shocked
Thank God I only have 1 weapon. Thank God I work in a Security Monitoring Room. Thank God my son is a Locksmith and alarm installer!!!.........I imagine that makes me lucky! Grin

Any Security firm with more than 1 weapon is no longer allowed to operate out of a residential premises and has to have a "vault" insyalled which can only be accessed by "remote' permission from a Control romm at a different premises. It also has to be continually monitored with CCTV facilities. Shocked

All this has come about because of a recent runof handgun thefts from Security Companies.
yes it's a knee-jerk reaction, and I think it goes a little too far. But it will certainly make less handguns available to theives.

But what about the 2000 or so that are reputed to come in via shipping containers each year, out of which 1 in 20 are physically opened and checked??? Angry

I gone and got all 'long winded" again..........................ah well Wink

I was waiting for someone to say this.
I grew up in a town of 281 people. Almost every single one of them own at least one gun, and I guarantee that there are more guns than people in that town.
As far as outhouses, well there are none in use these days. Sure there are some vehicles on blocks, but not anywhere near as many as you have there in St. Louis, MO. And as for the illegitimate children, well i suppose that you meant that they had lots of them, but the way you worded your post I can't figure out what exactly you were trying to say.
By putting this town of people down like that you show your own downfalls and personally I feel sorry for you that you don't come from a place like that. Take my high school for example. On any given day, you walk through the parking lot and you will find almost none of the cars locked, and almost all of them have a gun in them. Never been a shooting in my town, the only crime is some minor vandalism, and the occasional person that runs one of the two stop signs.
It never ceases to amaze me how small minded some people can be.

Just another redneck,
Kevin

There are literally 100'000's of Thunderboxes (outhouses) in Australia. However, we do know what Sewage is. It's still not available in alot of the smaller towns and of course, the Outback.

In fact, I'd love to have my old thunderbox back. because I have been recently informed that i need to do about $2000 worth of pipe replacement because the mongrel Jacarandas are invading the sewer pipes.
NO such problem with the ol' Sh*tbox. Just a smelly hole and a few million flies................ahhh home!!

Love

Hi Kevin... Grin...!
Can you explain to me, as someone who lives in a large, peacefull Town in England, where hand guns don't exist, why your Town in America should have so many hand gun owners...?
...just curious... Roll Eyes...!

Hi Paul,
Actually only about one- third  the guns in my hometown are hand guns, a rifle is the main choice for most people there.
Maybe I should explain the town. It is a small town way out in the country in north Texas. It takes over thirty minutes just to get to the nearest grocery store. People there own guns for many reasons. The most common is hunting, closely followed by coyote control. Coyotes are a major problem there and they are hunted  year-round mercilessly. Shooting also seems to be a major passtime for many of the residents of that small town as there is a serious lack of things to do there and many people just don't feel like driving the half hour to see a movie or go to the bar. Countless nights are passed sitting around a big brush fire drinking beer and telling stories with friends and family. Imagine growing up in a place where if you did anything wrong you knew that your parents would know about it before you got home, needless to say there are very few misbehaved teens in my hometown. The lifestyle is slower and simpler. My previous post was in no way intended to suggest that I agree with the ordinance passed in Geuda Springs, Kansas. I really don't care one way or the other since it is a load of crap and totally contradicts its self. Quote:
Noncomplying residents would be fined $10 under the ordinance,

Quote:
Those who suffer from physical or mental disabilities, paupers and people who conscientiously oppose firearms would be exempt.

Maybe I do not understand it but it sounds like they are saying "everyone must own a gun, unless they are disabled, poor, or object to owning a gun." Please correct me if I am wrong, but do we not have the right to own a gun? Last time I checked I still had that right. And is it not also my right to not own a gun? I am pretty sure its not required to own a gun, so what did this ordinance accomplish? Nothing.

Sorry if that doesn't explain anything Fozzer, it is not the easiest thing to explain.

Kevin

I grew up in a place just like that. Not a gun in sight except the toy ones I used to play with & the rifles I was taught to use on a proper range while in the Air Cadets. I was a pretty good shot too & could strip & reassemble a Bren gun blindfold in less than 1 minute when I was 14 years old. I've never seen a handgun close up except in movies & have no wish to do so.

This is in no way intended to cause any offence. I appreciate that we have completely different cultures & to my mind this subject should be treated the same as politics & religion. The feelings run too deep for a practical discussion. If I tried for 12 months or 12 years, nothing I say will ever change anyone's point of view. I never understood it but know the right to bear arms is important to the majority of Americans. If it was ever proposed that we do the same here you wouldn't see me for dust.

Hi Kevin...!
Thanks for your reply...
...still confused regarding your laws tho'.... Wink...LOL...!
Over here, the thought of owning a gun of any sort doesn't normally cross our minds, there is no need to own one, so no-one gets shot, intentonally or accidentally.... Grin...!
The people who get involved in shooting incidents over here are generally "residents from overseas" employed in drug trading, gang warfare, etc, similar to your Los Angeles, Oakland, New York, etc, imigrants....OOOpppssss.... Cry...!
I fear that our large cities are now mirroring your problems.
Without them I think that there would be no need for hand guns on either side of the Pond...!

Cheers Kevin.

P.S. I receive the San Francisco, Oakland, Costra Costa, Los Angeles and New York Times, E-mail news every day and read about all your grief.... Wink...!

P.P.S. Interesting subject providing that it doesn't get too deep... Wink...!

Pete. I see nothing wrong in that either - just as long as you don't point it at me or anyone else.
