I am not sure where I should post this, but I was wondering if anyone can help me with an internet problem.  I was surfing the internet when all of a sudden, tons of pop-ups appeared on my screen Angry  I was able to get rid of them and exit internet explorer, but when I tried to return to my usual homepage, an advertisement came up.  I thought that my homepage setting had simply been changed, but I was wrong.  The advertisement had somehow changed its address to www.yahoo.com, www.google.com, and www.msn.com. ; Now, I can no longer go to these sites because they automatically become the advertisement warning about downloading a program to improve internet privacy ???  I have done nothing out of the ordinary and do not understand where all of this came from.  I am just very frusterated as to how and why this stupid ad was able to rewrite its address to emulate these sites Cry  I cannot thank you enough for any help or advice that you may have concerning this problem.  I just hope that the ad does not spread to any other sites!

You might have accidently downloaded a spyware cookie. I suggest you try AdAware to start with. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Also delete Temp Internet Files & History from IE Tools/Internet Options. Visiting some sites can automatically make their address your home page. You might need to change that.

Let us know if that fixes it.

Also get Spybot (I found it over at downloads.com), run in conjunction with AdAware, you should be able to keep your system clean.

Thank you for the help Smiley  I downloaded and installed both programs and they were able to find and delete a great deal of the spam crap on my computer.  Spybot discovered that the source of my problem lies in common hijacker files under the names of www.yahoo.com, www.google.com, and www.msn.com. ; Unfortunately, it was only able to find and delete the common hijacker file for www.msn.com. ; At least now I am able to reach msn.  Now I have to try to find the other two common hijacker files Sad  Well, I appreciate your help.  I had no idea where to go with this problem.  I have also downloaded a pop-up stopper and other spam blockers to prevent this from happening again.

Try using the updates feature in Spybot and Ad-aware. Maybe the updates have the fix for the other websites  Smiley
