What has to be done to convert a CFS2 file to be usable in FS2002Pro?
I have downloaded the Hawk III from Chinese Air Aces (a CFS2 a/c). I'd love to use it in FS2002 Pro; is that even possible?

Typcially - just install it to your FS2002 aircraft folder. FS2002 will ignore the CFS2 specific files (dp, etc.)
Note that it may fly "lighter" since some of the aircraft "weight" is affected by the dp files - weapons loadout, etc.

This has probably been asked and answered 100's of times...but I'm just another newb who loves your site.
Does this apply across the MS CS/FS board? Can you pull all of them into FS2004? If so what is the default folder they belong in?
I've really been enjoying my 2004, but I'd really like to have a mustang, lightning, corsair, and a marauder in my livery.
Thanks for your help and thanks for the wonderful site

ANY Combat Flight Sim aircraft will transfer over to FS2k4 or 2k2, but as to FS to CFS: the aircraft in question, unless specified, will probably NOT have a DP (Damage Profile) along with it. This means that the aircraft will not register damage when hit by fire in CFS.
For instance: a downloaded 747-400 for FS2k4 will not be damagable in CFS, and an F-14 designed for FS2k4 or 2k2 will not register damage OR show a weapon's loadout in CFS.
Since I do not own a CFS program, I am not entirely sure about this, but it comes from info gathered over a period of nearly a year. In other words: I could be wrong, but I doubt it . . .

Ender. I would rephrase that as MOST CFS2 aircraft. There is always an exception. Some examples are not FS2002/4 compatible due to being created with the older design applications or their CFS2-style multi-LOD model. They are installed in the same way as any other aircraft. In most cases the Panel and/or Sound CFG will need realiasing for them to show up on the menu.

I've recently done a lot of experimenting with CFS2 aircraft in FS9. I've found that in some cases the textures need reformatting to display properly. There is a very long thread* on some of the more common problems people experience in the FS2004 section. I forget quite where right now & you might have to go back a few pages to find it.

From his question I don't think Marc is too worried about doing the reverse. In most cases FS2002/4 aircraft will not be compatible with CFS2 without hex editing the MDL files. This is not difficult but should not be attempted without some experience. FS2000 aircraft are more suitable for CFS2. FS aircraft without their own DP files will use the default DP.
*PS. I found the thread I mentioned. Had to go back 20 or so pages. It's a long thread covering 4 pages but please take the time to follow it right the way through.

Mainly about CFS2 Spitfires in FS9 but lots of useful tips for any type of aircraft.

Thank y'all for your time...after posting last night I found the reference link on the main page that covers this topic thoroughly. I think after reading that that I'll most likely purchase CFS2 or 3... If I'm going to fly it(as it were) I'd prefer it to behave properly.
But since I'm asking questions that are older than the hills: Which cfs is better/more realistic, 2 or 3?

I would say CFS2 is a "better" game, simply because it can use aircraft from both the CFS series and the regular FS series. CFS3 runs on a different platform, making any aircraft from CFS1 or 2, or any of the FS versions unusable. Essentially, it has more room for expansion through simple downloads.
That's all IMHO, since I don't own any CFS programs. You might try posting a question in the CFS forums and see if you get any better responses.

Well, as the former CFS Editor of this site I do claim to know just a little about CFS.
Personally I prefer CFS2 for 2 main reasons.
1. CFS3 will not run properly on my own system.
2. More important to me is the reason Ender mentioned. There are far more addons of all types available for CFS2. It's also much easier to create them yourself.
Check out the Fox Four site from my signature to see what's possible.
