To be honest I wouldn't have noticed anything out of the ordinary without reading the title first. It's just another photo of a 747 to me - but then, I would rarely give it a 2nd glance as I was never particularly interested in modern airliners.

You're anthropomorphising it. It's a 747; it can't be pi$$ed off. That 747 is out there. It doesn't feel pain or remorse or pity. It's after you and it WILL NOT STOP!

For those confused with the above statement, it's a reference to the movie 'The Terminator' 8)

Yah, that plane is definitely mad at all of us, probably because we crash them too often . . .
You know what guys, I once saw a very scary photo from where I came. One of he guys posted this 744 with the 5-th engine. The photograph was taken from the window and here was one spare engine mounted on the wing, which is being dropped onto the plane spotters.
Let me find the pic . . . ok, found it !
One of my friends who is a real 744 pilot said about this pic . . .
Quote:
We sometimes carry them on the wing just so we can fly over planespotters with their cameras (in dodgy places) and drop it on them.
Scary stuff, huh ?

i've seen shots of 747's with an extra engine on one side...don't know if it was true, but the text with the photos said it was to replace the other one who failed...anyway, personally i don't think it's possible to hang an engine under a wing just like that. you need to have points to attach it, there are aerodynamic consequences, wires and fuel connections must be available,...

Well, actually it is true. They put engines onto the plane's wing to transport them, and of course, it gives the plane some real drag, but they do not put them into the baggage compartment because it is for passengers who pay for the space. Therefore they just mount it on the wing. They usually mount one on one wing and anoother on another wing so the plane won't go in big circles. It gives the plane some drag but it pays off when the engine is delivered. One of my friends, who is a 744 pilot said that they do that, but he did not transport any engines so far. He says probably they don't trust him.
*BTW: he's a Qantas Senior Captain . . . been flying for about 21 years already.*

I remeber seeing shots of early BOAC 747s with an extra engine stowed in the same place, although I think I remeber seeing a fairing over the intake and exhaust...

Aha - I had a feeling I'd seen one on a VC-10, and...
Apparently it was more elegant than the 747. That picture was from 1963...
It was probably easier and more ecenomical to carry a spare in those days than have to wait for a replacement

About the engine under the wing, thats going to a delayed jet that needs her engine replaced. and the engine is under the wing for ease of removal and transport to the other aircraft that blew the engine.
We lost an engine on take off out of BKK, Dumped fuel and did a Hurried mealservice then a landing back at BKK. the aircraft waited 4days for her replacement to turn up. then some engine testing and back on the route.
Heres a air rage pic,
