Well, for those who use orbiter already know how hard it is to get the Shuttle Atlantis in space and keep it there.

Here are some pics of my attempt.

Ready for lift off.
...

As I take off, I adjust me heading and attitude so that I can try to establish the orbit.
...

As my booster are are running out, the system automatically jetisons them to lighten up the load.
...

Then, my fuel tank runs out and is also jetisoned. Now I'm running on internal fuel.
...

Can you guess where I'm flying over?
...

However, I failed to make the orbit so my Shuttle is now burning up like a fireball from hell. Hey, do I smell Bar-B-Q?
...

The next day, I tried again.

As I was climbing in altitude, I got curious as to what that little "J" key on my keyboard would do.

UH-OH!!!!!!!!!! HOLY CR@P! Oh man, I wish I didn't push that button.
...

Uhh......I think one is headed to China and the other is headed to Russia. Grin
...

This is hard. Embarrassed

If NASA ever tries to hire me, I will refuse to join. Grin

Sounds like the last thing a redneck pilot might ever hear! Grin

Those last two shots are great!  A little like cruising along at 50000 ft and watching curiously as your wing engines fly by you at Mach 1. Wink

Well, this simulator may give a little headache when you try to install it, but at least you never spent $50 on it compared to Microsoft's. Roll Eyes

Hey Michael, here's the link.

http://www.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/~martins/orbit/orbit.html

It's a 2-piece download. All you need it the Base package and the texture package. The other hi-res texture packages are just optional, but can give you more detail and realism.

The best thing about Orbiter is that it keeps you thinking. When I first tried to fly a ship into space, it was hard as hell. But I still had the urge to overcome the problems.

Nice pics!  I like the second one the best.   8)  I've been using orbiter a lot lately, too.  That shuttle is pretty hard to fly...

About your pressing J pics, just a few days ago, I pressed J before launching to see what would happen.  As soon as you turn the engines on, you see an amazing crash scene.  Shocked

(PS: It looks like you're flying over Florida in that pic.  Wink)

It's not rubbish.  It is just a bit more difficult than most other sims. Smiley

Good news.

There is a website that provideds an excellent addon for sounds.

With this sound package, you can get many features.

You can hear:

1. A countdown as you begin to launch.
2. A sound sequencing editor to help you make your own sequence of sounds.
3. A SDK on how to add in your own sounds to orbiter.
4. as you dock on any station in orbit, the docking sounds start.
5. Even undocking sounds.
6. Engine sounds.
7. Internal sounds [air conditioning, ambient noise, etc.]
8. Landing sounds and brake sounds.
9. ATC chatter [both English and Russian]
10. and many more.

You can find the addon at:

http://orbiter.dansteph.com/download.php

At the top of the list is the addon that is titled "OrbiterSound 2.5". Click on where it says "Download" on the side.

The package even installs itself.

I use it all the time and I have plenty of fun.

Yeah, I have it too.  It's great! :-D

Have you tried the Delta Glider II?  Now that's hard!  It adds new factors to the game such as  the safety of you and your crew and engine start-up to the game.

My first time trying it, I decided not to read the checklist that came with it and try to figure it out on my own.  That was a mistake.  Cheesy  When I thought I was turning on the hover engines, I was really dumping fuel.  I didn't realize it untill half of it was gone.  Roll Eyes  Then I finally got everything ready for takeoff (or so I thought) and tried to launch.  About a minute into my flight, a warning light came on:  The temperature in the cabin was dangerously high.  So I landed to try to figure out what happend.  I flipped switches and turned knobs and the next thing I know I realize that everyone on the ship died.   Shocked  I guess I shouldn't have flipped that last switch.  Wink

Orbiter is a great freeware program, with lots of great addons out there too!

One thing I can't get to load is the NASSP4.0 LM panel, the instructions are undecypherable but the screen shots look great compared to the the two box HUD that is standard. Has anyone been sucessful in getting this to work?

Heres the link:http://www.geocities.jp/rabiddogs_p64/acp4.html

Download the hires earth and moon, they are worth the long download.

The guy who designed and programed this simulator is named Martin.

For those of you who don't know yet, Martin used to design a previous simulator. However, it did not have the so-called particle system, it did not support level9 textures and so on. But now, this new release has those features.

As time goes by, Martin would announce the coming of a new orbiter sim with new features. He would even post screenshots to give you an idea of what it may look like when released.

And unlike Microsoft, he doesn't say when each new will be available. He said that this is his hobby [FAQ section] and that he has NO intension in rushing his creations [compared to Microsoft Roll Eyes ].

www.avsim.com has the most number of available add-ons for Orbiter. However, there are not that many add-ons for this new release since this version of orbiter is still brand new. But over time, there will be more.
