and who is your favourite manufacturer of aircrafts?
Hey
Ok my favourite aircraft type would have to be the harrier, basically because its like none else, other than the soon to be Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) plus it was the aircraft that made me want to become a pilot. There are many other aircraft types i like, especially the stealth jets but the harrier got my vote.
And for my favourite manufacturer i will have to pick Mig or British Aerospace, Mig because i absolutely adore the 29 or "Fulcrum" (not as much as the harrier of course
) and Briish Aerospace because of the Harrier (i think BAe manufactured that) but not only that the brand new Eurofighter Typhoon and them making almost every military dispaly teams Aircraft the Hawk.
So whats your favourite aircraft and favourite aircraft manufacturer?
Kind Regards
Mark aka. Harrier

My favourite manufacturer would be Hawker I think...
Fury (nice)
Nimrod ( even prettier than the Fury) (added by Felix)
Hart/Hind (nicer)
Hurricane (lurverly)
Typhoon (ooooh)
Tempest (OOOOH)
Sea Fury (WOW)
Sea Hawk (nice)
Hunter (BIG OOOOOH)
Harrier... (Silly idea
- but it worked!)
My favourite aircraft is a hard one, Gloster Gladiator maybe?

hmmm i have to chose between the three current US bombers...but i'll vote for the B-2A! everytime i see this flying wing...i almost start crying. the B-1B gets silver, i love to see it taking of (my ears still hurt), third place goes to the B-52...beautiful bomber with a long history!
favorite manufacturer...i think Lockheed Martin. they produced so many planes and the still keep going (with the JSF). i especially like the Skunk Works...with the amazing SR-71 and F-117. god bless Kelly!
Raw power...the J-58.&&

Harrier, once upon a time there was an aeroplane called the Kestrel, built by Hawker, which then became Hawker Siddeley, which eventually became BAe, the BAE SYSTEMS, to give it its correct current name. The Kestrel lead to the development of the HARRIER...
The Typhoon I mention is the Hawker Typhoon, a very sucessful WW2 ground attack aircraft...

Thanks
what do you think of the new eurofighter typhoon? its deliberately made unstable for the maneauvres (sp?) it pulls and its a "fly-by-wire" jet too.

Harrier - you have revealed your age -
The Eurofighter, of course, is an excellent machine. I just hope that it - and it's contemporaries - never have to find out just how good they really can be.

firstly the euro-fighter(not my fav plane just comments on) It is some 15 years out of date if not more, it has turned into a huge waste of money, and is still having problems, despite being god knows how many years late for delivery. had it been brought into service when originally planed it would have been the best thing flying for any air-force, however with the F-22 now coming into service and the JSF just round the corner the eurofighter will be pushed into the mediocre area of planes.
as for fav plane jet fighter F14
overall plane the DC10

The Supermarine Spitfire V!!!!!!!! Pure deliciousness with wings on
Favourite manufacturer Mil. I'm not at all biased, they build great ground attack helicopters
Did I mention my little day out in the Hind?
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

so you dont like the typhoon
ill be in service with the navy by the time the JSF takes over the Harrier (im 16 felix
)
the JSF is a marvellous machine, hovering, breaking sound barriers, and being stealthy (only heard about the stealt bit, is it true?) oh yeah by the way can the JSF hover for longer than the harrier? last time i recall the harrier could only hover for about 90 seconds due to insufficent water aboard.

lol, actually i do like the typhoon i am just dissapointed that i saw this aircraft at the farnborough airshow on one of its first ever outings my cousin got us backstage passes and everything really cool to see up close, however at that time what was only a demo model should have actually been operational.
and yes the JSF is stealth equipped. however like the F-22 its still not quite as stealthy as the F117.
as for the hovering, you really cant compair the harrier and the JSF, the harrier lives to hover and do party tricks while having fun, the JSF is designed to use the hover function as an operational tool, its still not as good as the harrier in that respect

True, the JSF is quite unsteady vertical landing and i get what you mean, the JSF's hovering compatabilities just for getting back on the ground where as the harrier is a real show stopper at the air shows but any idea what the maximum hover time is on the JSF?

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a very good aircraft, and in the hands of the very capable pilots of the RAF should be second to none. The F/A-22 on paper* should theoretically be able to win a one on one dogfight, but an RAF/USAF conflict is highly unlikey, as is one between USAF and potential Typhoon customers.
(*the same should true about an F-15 v. Sea Harrier FRS. 1 conflict. However, in the early 80s this was done and the Sea Harriers won!)
Also, you are right about its Aerodynamic instability. This allows the manouvrability that we've seen in its displays. This is also why you hope that you don't have a complete failure of all the flight control computers (I believe a 64g somersault swiftly follows!)
All in all it should be perfectly capable of doing all it needs to do in replacing the Tornado F3 and the Jaguar (sob).
And yes, you're quite right about the water in the Harrier...

H.G. Hawker Engineering Co. Ltd. Formed 1920 from the remains of Sopwith Aircraft. Named after ex-WWI pilot Harry Hawker, who formed the new company with some of the former directors including Tom Sopwith. Hawker was killed the following year competing in a Nieuport Goshawk racer & Sopwith took over the reins.
Name changed to Hawker Aircraft Ltd in 1933 & Hawker Siddeley Aircraft in 1935, finally becoming Hawker Siddeley in 1960. Chief Designer - the brilliant Sidney Camm - reponsible for the classic range of Hawker biplane fighters & light bombers through the WWII Hurricane, Typhoon & Tempest. This line ended with the incredible Sea Fury before his classic jets - Sea Hawk, Hunter, Kestrel, Harrier & finally his valued input on the Tornado MRCA just before he died in 1966.
http://user.tninet.se/~ytm843e/camm.htm
This famous company became the basis of British Aerospace (BAe) when the British aircraft industry was ruined in the mid-1960s.
You might have guessed that Hawker is my choice of favourite aircraft manufacturer. Sir Sidney Camm is my nomination for best aircraft designer of all time.

numbers are not an indication of rank, just to limit me to 10 machines
1: Su-37, Ultimate agility in a good-looking airframe
2: MiG-31, even if it's oficially a little slower than the foxbat, it still is faster than anything the west can offer
3: YF-23, looks better and is a better stealth compared to the F/A-22
4: Su-30MK with -FU engines, the thing the KLu should have bought instead of the F-35
5:B-1B, best looking stealth
6: Concorde & Tu-144, you know why
7: Tu-114, who cares about noise abatement... a prop that does M.80
8: EE Lightning
9: Spitfire, later big-engine models
10: Il-2, best ground-attack machine of ww2
Russian planes:
IL-76 (all standard length ones)
,
Tu-154 and Il-62
,
Tu-134
and

Favorite aircraft of all time: Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina. I don't know why it is it just does something to me every time I see one. It is outdated and antiquated but there is nothing better than a vintage plane, they just have something about them that anything modern can't beat. Maybe one day I can see a real one, I hear that there is one in a museum near me so I might just have to plan a trip.

Interesting. I read a somewhat different account. The way I understood it Sir Sidney Camm & Sir Stanley Hooker (Bristol Aero Engines) were old friends & sometimes had dinner together. Hooker had previously worked at Rolls-Royce & was responsible for development of the supercharger of the Merlin. During dinner they apparently discussed their ideas on various subjects & the possibility of a VTOL aircraft cropped up. One of them drew a rough sketch on a napkin. Camm promptly forgot all about it until Hooker rang him up 6 months later & told him "We built your engine - now where's the bloody plane to put it in?".
I don't remember where I read this now or what truth there is to it. I believe it was in an article written by Camm himself. I do know that I prefer this version rather than any official account. Having worked in the industry myself it seems more like the way things were done in the good old days.

The Tornado is a joint project including Britain, Germany and Italy. The company is officially named Panavia. I think the wings were originally manufactured in Italy & fitted at BAe Preston or Samlesbury.
http://www.tornado-data.com/History/history.htm
The engines were develped by Turbo Union, joint effort by MTU, Rolls-Royce & Fiat.

early cold war: North American F-86
vietnam era: F-4 phantom (dad flew one)
late cold war: northrop F/A 18 or Saab Viggen
modern era: Lockheed YF-23 (yes its the one that lost the contract) /Lockheed JSF. F-33 is it? (sorry but the styling of the typhoon just doesn't trip my trigger)
My list is compiled using both performance and styling
this is just military aircraft. For civilian aircraft I cant even begin to decide.
I will say this though, the two civilian aircraft I would most like to own are a DeHavilland Turbo Otter(go anywhere) and a Grumman Albatross (A flying scuba diving platform would be too cool).

My favorite would have to be the P-40 series. It wasn't the best performer but it was rugged. I've always routed for the underdog. Plus I like the way it looks.

The question is interesting, but it's like asking "Who is the world's most beautiful woman?" Answer: It depends. Too many variables to give one definitive answer.
If we are talking favorite in the "looks" catagory, I would take the P-38 for the military and DC-8-62 for civilian and DC-3 as a crossover.
p.s. reading the results under this question, I realized that as a newbie I'm an American minority here...

The CF-100 is my favourite older aircraft; big, heavy and ugly; but there's just something about an aircraft that smiles at you as it's coming up from behind. (If you don't know what I mean; it's 8 belly-guns formed an evil grin with the engine nacelles as eyes when viewed from ahead.)
Favourite warbird: Spitfire Mk.IX
Favourite plane to fly: Beech Queen Air, stripped for skydiving duty. Lovely to fly; nice, confident feel.
Favourite civ. plane I haven't flown: Piper Malibu. LOVE the looks of that machine.

To be honest, I love Rockwell for the B-1's, as they would be the ultimate flying job. But my favorite aircraft is the Pilatus PC-12 becuse I actualy have a shot at owning one someday, and they look sweet, so pilatus comes out on top. #3, of course, is our good buddy and ally: Boeing.

I also have to agree with menias. Lancair's come from my home turf, so natualy I am loyal to them and they are #4. Not to mention the fact that they look bad a**.

There are other great plane, but are just not good enough to be in that list... 8)
Favorite companies: OKB Sukhoi, Mikoyan-Gurevitch Design Bureau, ANTK Tupolev, and SOKO.
P.S. Someone mentioned that F-22 is not as stealthy as F-117A. Well, all I can say is that it would mean that it ain't stealthy at all, since F-117A was very "unstealthy" during 1999 bomb raid in FR Yugoslavia.

First of all let me say I never flew an aeroplane I never liked.
They are like women and beer, some just better than others.
With 30 types or so in the Scandal (Log) Book like the DC6, DC4, DC3(C47, Dak), Canso (PBY, Catalina) Saunders (Hope I spelt that right), Cessna 421, 337, 185 (wheel/skis and floats), 172, 150, Beech 18 (Expediter), DHC-1 (Chipmunk) and of course the DHC-3 Otter (Amphibious Floats, Wheel/Skis) I will have to say the old PW R 1340 9cylinder DHC-3 Otter is tops. Not the Turbo Otter as I never had a chance to fly one (would if it came about though) and I am sure it is a Great aeroplane.
From the Sahara to the High Artic the old work horse served the Royal Canadian Air Force well. In United Nations livery to RCAF Search and Rescue and Air Transport Command she shone above all. Never faltering nor failing, then on to bush operations where she still performs above all the rest to-day.
She could take off on a dime and leave 9 cents change, fly corner to corner around a building and take a dam good pounding that most flying boats would shy away from in Georgian Bay with 11 souls aboard. (I know I was on her, only time I ever got seasick
) but she took off in 3 meter swells and got us all home.
Well maybe she never had missiles hanging under her wings or belly, no camouflage that I know of BUT she is my pick for Number One.
DeHavilland Aircraft would have to be my choice for Manufacturer.
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
