My favorite would have to be the P-40 series.  It wasn't the best performer but it was rugged.  I've always routed for the underdog.  Plus I like the way it looks.

The question is interesting, but it's like asking "Who is the world's most beautiful woman?"  Answer: It depends.  Too many variables to give one definitive answer.

If we are talking favorite in the "looks" catagory,  I would take the P-38 for the military and DC-8-62 for civilian and DC-3 as a crossover.

p.s. reading the results under this question, I realized that as a newbie I'm an American minority here...  Grin

The CF-100 is my favourite older aircraft; big, heavy and ugly; but there's just something about an aircraft that smiles at you as it's coming up from behind. (If you don't know what I mean; it's 8 belly-guns formed an evil grin with the engine nacelles as eyes when viewed from ahead.)
Favourite warbird: Spitfire Mk.IX
Favourite plane to fly: Beech Queen Air, stripped for skydiving duty. Lovely to fly; nice, confident feel.
Favourite civ. plane I haven't flown: Piper Malibu. LOVE the looks of that machine.

To be honest, I love Rockwell for the B-1's, as they would be the ultimate flying job.  But my favorite aircraft is the Pilatus PC-12 becuse I actualy have a shot at owning one someday, and they look sweet, so pilatus comes out on top. #3, of course, is our good buddy and ally: Boeing.

I also have to agree with menias.  Lancair's come from my home turf, so natualy I am loyal to them and they are #4.  Not to mention the fact that they look bad a**.

Best helicopters: Mi-8(legend), Mi-24, Mi-28, Ka-50, Ka-52, Sa341 Gazelle, Mi-34, Ka-28
Best VTOL A/C: Yak-38

There are other great plane, but are just not good enough to be in that list... 8)

Favorite companies: OKB Sukhoi, Mikoyan-Gurevitch Design Bureau, ANTK Tupolev, and SOKO.

P.S. Someone mentioned that F-22 is not as stealthy as F-117A. Well, all I can say is that it would mean that it ain't stealthy at all, since F-117A was very "unstealthy" during 1999 bomb raid in FR Yugoslavia.

First of all let me say I never flew an aeroplane I never liked.
They are like women and beer, some just better than others.
With 30 types or so in the Scandal (Log) Book like the DC6, DC4, DC3(C47, Dak), Canso (PBY, Catalina) Saunders (Hope I spelt that right), Cessna 421, 337, 185 (wheel/skis and floats), 172, 150, Beech 18 (Expediter), DHC-1 (Chipmunk) and of course the DHC-3 Otter (Amphibious Floats, Wheel/Skis) I will have to say the old PW R 1340 9cylinder DHC-3 Otter is tops.  Not the Turbo Otter as I never had a chance to fly one (would if it came about though) and I am sure it is a Great aeroplane.
From the Sahara to the High Artic the old work horse served the Royal Canadian Air Force well.  In United Nations livery to RCAF Search and Rescue and Air Transport Command she  shone above all.  Never faltering nor failing, then on to bush operations where she still performs above all the rest to-day.
She could take off on a dime and leave 9 cents change, fly corner to corner around a building and take a dam good pounding that most flying boats would shy away from in Georgian Bay with 11 souls aboard. (I know I was on her, only time I ever got seasick Smiley) but she took off in 3 meter swells and got us all home.
Well maybe she never had missiles hanging under her wings or belly, no camouflage  that I know of BUT she is my pick for Number One. Smiley
DeHavilland Aircraft would have to be my choice for Manufacturer.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
