Hi Jonathan,

Yeah, please don't get me wrong. It's everyone's choice as to what AV system they use but the thing is they MUST use one. If they want to go out and buy a system that's fine BUT cash is a problem for a lot of guys on the forums here especially the younger ones .

Well they needn't think that by going for a free system (esp AVG) that they will then be getting something that's second rate.

They won't.

AVG is a world-class AV organisation and they make their money when people like me (who use their free stand-alone system) recommend their network systems to corporate clients. For them their free system is a terrific way to promote themselves and their products and they should be applauded and supported for what they are doing to help overcome the menace of computer viruses by providing it.

I don't see McAfee, Norton or their like doing anything like as much without putting their hands out first.

Andrew, it seems all firewalls are a problem when it comes to flying online.

Oddly enough, Zone Alarm let's me fly online without any problems. What I mean was my LAN between another computer. With ZoneAlarm running, the LAN is usless, and disabling zonealarm is a disaster when i'm online

Can't help you there - but something more about AV.

Yesterday I went to a new client with 'slow PC problems' which I suspected was down to a virus.

He had up-to-date  Norton. Did a scan - all clear.

Did a scan with up-to-date AVG and virus found.

You can stuff Norton - but if people don't want to take advice that's up to them

OK, hope it works. I ended up using FDISK to delete the partition and then download a utility to create the XP floppy disks. Then I re-installed Windows. However it is slightly slower than it was ??? Any ideas ????

NEVER EVER GO ON-LINE WITHOUT an anti-virus software program.
I had a very nasty computer virus a few Weeks ago,I was using Norton and updated it,but it did not spot the virus I had,as the virus was programmed to by-pass Norton and Mcfaree.
The virus was slowing my computer down, and using a lot of the processor power.
I tracked it down to windows, and it was cloning itself.
If you want to do a quick check to see if you have a virus
do a disc scan,if if wont scan, then you have a virus.
Another way is to go to start, then programs, then access
ories, then go down to system monitor.
Start the log then watch the power that is used by the kennel processor.
Make sure no other programs are running.
It should go up no more than about 20-30%
Aol could not identify my virus,Norton did not know what it was,and I even put it in for a health check with PC World,(not telling them that there was a virus in my system)as they said that they would remove virus's.
But it was still there when I got my computer back.
I removed it my self the only way was to re-format the hard drive, and I have now just got my files loaded back in after three Weeks!
I do not use norton anymore,,,I use AGV,Antivir personal edition,Spybot, and a couple of others.

My warning to all about the virus I had(and I did inform these forums about it)DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY FREE ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE,as that is how I got my virus.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

Anyone that goe's on-line without a payware antivirus software,is running the risk of getting a virus through an E-Mail,or website, and they in turn will pass it on to other people's computers,
Also make sure that the Anti-virus software is updated regular.
I carn't understand why people would want to get on-line without an antivirus software installed.

Thanks For Reading this important information!!!

You could always try downloading a better antivirus off of Kazzaa but thats a little against the law but if you do decide to download it at kazzaa.com

Its a file (a.k.a virus) spreader.....

They even have a "lite" i.e. anti spyware version, this should tell you something about this little beastie..... Wink

Norton, hmm, great if you love your system resources eaten up....

Zone alarm - pretty good.

And as for e-mail, why allow them to get to outlook first? use something like this http://www.mailwasher.net/ Mailwasher, a great way to bounce mail and block the sender without the worry of outlook express going tits up.

Reccomended to me by somebody who really does know what he's talking about.  Wink

It's actualy a P2P  Networking system, so you can download stuff from other people. Most of it is illegal, however it does work, that's why people use it.
