I am purchasing a new dell in a couple of months and I was wondering which video card to purchase that will give me the least amount of problems with compatibility with most programs.

I am looking at the 256mb ATI Radeon or Nvidia graphic card. I have always been using Nvidia graphics card (upgraded my pc twice). But now that the graphics card has gotten way too much demanding for 500mhz PC I was wondering.

Will I have issues with FS2004 with ATI Radeon graphics card or is the NVidia company the best to go with graphics cards!?

go for the radeon...fast,cheap ,but there's still the "flickering"-problem in FS 2004. but nothing to be concerned about.

Nvidia is a must here. The Geforce FX cards are cheaper, more powerful, fully DirectX 9.0 compatible, and compatible with most modern games like FS2004. (ie no flickering)
I've bought Radeons in the past. One worked well but when I upgraded, it wasn't compatible with the new system. The other had a serious defect in which it wasn't drawing the image properly reguardless of driver. I returned both.

I've owned a Geforce2 MX400 and a Geforce FX5200, both outstanding cards. I've never had a problem with either of them. For your 500mhz system, a 256mb card may be a bit too much. You'd probably be better going with a Geforce FX5200 or an FX5600 which are both excellent 128mb cards.
I'd just like to stress that a computer is like a chain, it's only as strong as it's weakest link. A 500mhz processor with a FX5900 card isn't going to yield good graphics and vice verse.

Brfore investing a bunch of money in a new video card.... I'd go back through ALL the threads (to the July release date) about the NVidea based cards and also the ATI Radeon cards.

There is a lot of info there to digest....but it is likley worth the reading.  Bottom line .........like most stuff....... the most expensive stuff seems to give the best performance (there are a couple of exceptions).

So from that viewpoint, can you afford about $450-$500 USD for a video card?

From reading all the stuff...... you'll find that apparently NEITHER card is "lilly white" as far as FS2004 goes.  Which sort of points a bit toward Microsoft's code  Wink.

best,

Hey Mav,

Are the specs at the bottom of your signature the PC you say you're going to get or the one you've already got. (You did mention your '500mb' processor though)

If this is your current PC. Why do you need to update.............??  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Wink

Seriously, is this a 'Dell' package but, or has a PC shop put it together for you.
Seeing as you're asking about what graphics card to install, can I sak what graphics come with the set up 'as is'?
I saw a 'Dell" package the other day, for $A1500 (which is about $US1000). Although it didn't include a Monitor, it was this:

P4 2.8 Mb, Dual channel 2 x 256 DDR Ram, 400w power, 200 watt speakers, Soundblaster 64 Mb card, CD Burner (not sure of type) 10/100 lan Modem (256kbps).
All this and it had 'Integrated Intel graphics'! Not sure if they were shared graphics (do they still do that crap?)

Why would they do this? So much in resources but crap graphics that wouldn't even run CFS2 at max!  ??? ???

Toms Hardware Guide has several tests of current NVIDIA and ATI cards.  Worth reviewing.
On MS and 2004 code causing graphics card problems:
Maybe.
THG major controversy last several months has been that both NVIDIA and ATI optimize drivers for tests.  Tests use benchmarks and popular games.  If you own one of those games; then the driver is customized.  Until recently flight sims were not included in the tests.
My guess is that the flight sims are at the lower end of the games and sims population and that they get less attention by the card makers.  It's a matter of $ and priority.  It is likely a very difficult proposition to write driver code which satisfies gamers and simers given the wide array of products.  MS has made DX a standard but how much impact it has on design of specific drivers isn't known.  In a prior e-mail re 2004, MS was clearly miffed at ATI for drivers.  NVDIA and ATI have pledged to write driver code which isn't targeted at graphics card test results. We shall see.

The specs at the bottom of my thread is the computer I am getting built for me at Dell.

Right now my system specs are

Compaq Presario 5700t
Pentium 3 at 500mhz
64mb Nvidia Geforce 3
289 mb of PC100 SDRam memory
40 Gig hard drive

The new Dell PC I am about to purchase in November is the specs below although I am thinking about going to a Pentium 4 3.0 gig w/ 800mhz side bus because the 3.2 is about $230 more expensive.

People the cost is not a matter here. I am making an investment in a Great Pc that I hope will last for atleast the next 6 years!

As it stands these are the spec.

Dell Dimension 8300 series
Pentium 4 processor at 3.0 ghz w/ 800 Mhz side bus Hyper threading
1 Gig of DDR SDRAM memory
80 Gig hard drive
16x DVD-rom
48x CD-Rewrite drive
256mb Nvidia or ATI Radeon video card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Harmon speakers with sub woofers
18.1 Flat Panel Display
Wireless mouse and keyboard

At current $3,578.00 not including the $250 4yr warranty  Shocked

In building this PC to handle most games on the market, I was hoping someone would lead me in the right direction on choice of video card! I am deadlock on everything else it is a must ! Grin

See Toms Hardware Guide for graphics card reviews.

Six years from a computer with current technology?  Unlikely!  Value will fall faster than the resale price of a Ford Taurus.

You could have done much better by scaling back performance and planning a buy in 3-5 years.

If I did what you did I'd be sitting on the curb with my few posessions.

ok Br_ I haven't purchased my PC yet, But I will take a look at that website where you purchased yours.

But right now I feel more comfortable with a DELL because the customer service is worth spending a little extra! Grin

Daz it is a 1 gig DDR memory card I thought it said SDram next to it!  Undecided my bad! Good Eye  Wink!

Besides I can upgrade my PC with $2,000.00 worth of crdit with dell. that is why I am going with a Dell. When I purchased my Compaq in 1995 it was top of the line in PC's, the very next year they came out with 1 gig machines. 8 years later ( current year 2003)the fastest machine is a 3.2 (from my knowledge) on a Pentium 4. This PC has met its limit now. I can no longer upgrade it!

With this Dell Pentium 4 at 3.0 I can upgrade the Memory up to 2 gigs I can go up to atlest a 512mb Video card (which is probably the next step). So 8 years later most current games demand a minimum of 498 mhz processessor speed. So I think it will be a long while before a 3.0 gig is the minimum requirement. Don't you? I say I am good with this PC for the next 5-6 years with upgrades along the way!

Everyone has there preferences, as far as how to go about putting a PC together.

As I said before, and I'm sure most people agree, going the way of the 'pre-assembled Package' is definitely a no-no.

My Mrs went this way only three years ago. She went and bought a Compaq Pressario. At the time it was pretty much 'state of the art' as far as size, power and speed went, with 800 mb P3 and  128 mb Ram and a 20 gig HD. (it cost $A1899-00)
I didn't know much about PC's then. Don't know much now! Grin Wink But I knew enough then to tell her to go to the local PC shop man and get the same (which may not be as 'spiffy' looking, but would be better in the long run).

Within 6 months we learnt that the case (moulded) was too small to take any really worthwhile upgrade, Compaq were going broke (HP took them over, I believe?) and the Ram strips that were used were still the old style (double sided) which were, even then, out of date and hard to get in the 256 size (it only has 2 Ram ports).

My local PC shop man is a nice bloke and a friend - but not to the point where I'd get any great discount - just free, honest advice.
He said to me 2 months ago, that he would build me a very good  'Flight Sim' tailored CPU (just the Case and content) no monitors or attachments for around $800 - $1000 (Aust dollar is about 0.66 US).

He was offering this (I still have it in his handwriting on the back of an Invoice for some Ram).

2.2 - 2.5 GB P4 (depending on brand)
512 Dual Channel DDR (2 x 256)
40 GB HD
400 watt Power Supply
CD rewrite (No speeds or anything listed)
10/100 lan connection
128 mb Graphics card (depending on brand)

Obviously, items such as the graphics card and Processor are the ones that will decide if it's closer to $800 or $1000, but I think that's a pretty good set up for general simming (and any of my Business office needs too Grin)

I know many people wouldn't be happy with this, but for the price (and the fact that I'm going to try and build it myself for around $600-00, using some bits I already have), it'll do me for a good while.

I wouldn't expect it to last me much more than a couple of years before I had to consider updating to the next 'BIG' advancement in processor or graphics etc. Let's face it, who knows what great leap may be made in the next year or two!) Wink

I'm wondering, Mav, if you're not paying alot more than you normally would for equal performance, for the Dell name and their particular components, rather than 'generic' components that may be half the price.

But once again, each to his own. Everyone likes a nice new, shiny, really modern looking setup on thier PC desk, but that particular 'novelty' wears off after a short while. I (just me personally) can't see where there is $3000 value in any PC, especially from a company that 'specialises' in Packages, as such. I just couldn't trust them.  Grin Wink
I just think the local PC shop man has to rely on your return business and your referrals to other people. He can't afford to 'take you for a ride' like Compaq, HP et al.

P.S. One thing about the Mrs mistake! I've got all the software I'll need to make my new one work well for me. All I need is Norton Antivirus 2003.
It also showed me how much better Windows Me is than all the other 'silly' Op's ......................lol Grin Grin Wink

Hey Mav I just think you can get more from your money purchasing the pc components and putting them together by yourself, it's not hard at all, you just need to pay attention to the compatibility issues. I don't live in the US so I've never bought anything from that website; I was just using it as an example.
In my opinion these branded pc's are not god for gaming or heavy tasks they are made for normal users, although Dell is trying to get into this market with the Dimension XPS line, I dont think the customer service is worth spending the extra because you will need it because you have a Dell pc, I think you cant even configure the bios of a Dell pc but if you have your own you can upgrade it the way you want and probably allot cheaper. The pc I gave you as an example can be upgraded with 4Gb of Ram and any upcoming video card, and there was no generic component in that listing.

Here it goes again.
These would be my choice for a pc.

Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz FSB800MHz 512l2 cache with HT.

MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R Series motherboard, it has serial ATA gigabit LAN and Raid support. (it was the tom’s Hardware choice among other P4 mobos).

Corsair 1024Mb of Dual Channel DDR 400mhz. with heat spreader

Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum 7.1

Western Digital Caviar SE HD with 250 GB serial ATA and 7200rpm

MSI CD-RW 52x32xs2x

Sony DVD+-RW

Logitech Cordless MX Duo with MX700 optical mouse.

Antec 480W power supply.

Samsung SyncMaster 19inches LCD Monitor.

MSI Geforce FX 5900SP-VTD AGP 8X 256MB
