Personally I prefer anything MkXVI and up. I always liked the bubble canopy better. I would hand the title of most beautiful WWII fighter to Spitfire, even over the Mustang. Which is yours and why?

Always the Merlin engined high-backed models. I'm not that keen on the Griffons sound, and I really DON'T like the bubble canopy!
The MkV is probably my favourite, as it was built as an stopgap model and became the mode greatly produced model! Of course its basically a re-engined MkI, and the MkIX is a re-engined MkV..... Heck I could go on all day
But bottom line, the V is just the sexiest aircraft ever built
Of course the Seafire III was a modded MkV too. Delicious

For me it has to be the MkXIV. All Spits are fantastic, but those big Griffon engine types just look the part with that huge great five blade prop and awesome looking cowl bumps. The MkXIV really looks like it could "get the job done" and I think the growl of the Griffon sounds just great.
I am swayed a bit however by the fact that I grew up near Rolls Royce at Hucknall in Notts and we saw their MkXIV all the time when I was younger. Now they have a PR XIX and that still flies over here once in a while.

I like them all & have no particular favourite. The Merlin-engined versions have that classic sound I've always associated with the Spitfire & would recognise anywhere. Alex Henshaw, the legendary Supermarine test & display pilot flew every type of Spitfire built. During his time at Castle Bromwich he personally carried out something like 3,000 test flights. He probably knows more about the Spit than anyone else alive or dead.
http://www.angelfire.com/sd2/spitfirefactory/man.htm
This man once flew a Spit inverted down Broad Street, the main street of Birmingham, below the level of the buildings on either side. People still remember it today & I only wish I had a copy of the photo published in the local papers at the time. He preferred the Mk V over any other as it was the most aerobatic. I'll go along with that.
PS. Henshaw also regularly barrel-rolled the Lancaster during testing - with the crew on board.

Alas Kevin I have not yet had that honour. I've got up close and personal with a few. Touched a load, but not yet got my grubby paws on its controls and headed into the wild blue yonder. Its a matter of time......

Last weekend I stood with one hand on a F4U Corsair and one hand on the only flying F2G-D Super Corsair in the world. I was in heaven! And me without a camera!
All in all, the museum also had:
a TBM Avenger,
a Sea Fury,
a Mustang,
a P-19,
a Beech Staggerwing,
a DC-3
a 1/2 scale F/W 190
a F-86 Sabre Jet
ALL IN FLYING CONDITION!!!
Needless to say, I was in heaven...

RAF Hendon have the only two-seater conversion FW190 in the world (to the best of my knowledge).
Also they've recently got the P-40 back on display (Brensec would love it!), and they've got the Harvard back out in RAF yellow, a Tiger Moth, the mighty Lancaster, with B-17s and 25s for company!! Heck its got sooooooo much good stuff
I've been getting the giff on the Belgrade Air Museum, and am planning to organise a little trip down there, as they have a Spit V amongst other things.... I'll keep you posted
Mark
PS. Lucky on the Avenger. I've never got close to one, just seen them fly a couple of times

"Sigh of a Merlin" .... He would place a cup of water on the "dash" (for lack of a better word) and when rolling the Lanc, the cup would probably lift an inch or so, then settle back ... without loss of liquid ... another time, also scared a mech who was standing behind him - he lifted up an inch or so and settled back ...

I think it got to be a LF mk Vc, with the wing tips lopped off, a short spinner and de Havilland prop... Although I did spend many a weekend of my childhood at Old Warden which may explain this...

Yeah, the MkIX would be my second choice. When it comes to Spits, I think I'm a bit odd because I like the Griffons and the clipped wing models. The clipped wing LF MkIXe/XVI comes very close to the MkXIV as my top Spit!

The MkIX is my number 2 choice. Lovely plane. And Roger I have to agree the clipped wing ones look good, and handle great at low altitude. The oddest looking Spit was the high-altitude interceptor MkVII with its pointed rather than eliptical wings.

I never liked that high altitude wing. After D-DAy most UK based MkVII's got repainted in standard camo and took on a medium altitude roll. Some had those wingtips changed.
As for oddest looking, what about that Floatplane?

This & other common variations like different wing setups could be changed "in the field" & often was. I believe this makes it extremely difficult to track down the exact designation of some Spitfires.

The one variant Alex Henshaw never flew. He was too busy at the time to take up the offer & lost his opportunity to try it out.
As for oddest looking, how about the slip-wing version Felix mentioned? I've seen it on a Hurricane but never on a Spit.

I've just seen this and thought I'd get it up and running again.
I don't get into this forum much as I'm not that knowledgable on any specific plane to be of much use, but I am getting there on some.
I have just seen this at a site that I've visited many times for it's RAAF content.
Quote:
Spitfires began arriving in Australia from August 1942, the first of over 650 to be dismantled, crated and shipped over 12,000 miles from the UK to the 'other side of the world'. Only two Spitfire Marks were operated by the RAAF, the Mk V and VIII. Almost 250 Spitfires Mk Vc's, were delivered up until October 1943 when the first of the Mk VIII's arrived, considered by many to be the most aesthetically pleasing of all the Spitfire variants. RAAF Spitfires saw action with the RAAF in the Northern Territory, New Guinea, Moluccas Islands and Borneo.
The part about the MkVIII being "considered by many to be the most aesthetically pleasing of all the Spitfire variants" is particularly pertinent to this topic. I don't see the Mk VIII mentioned here (I may have missed it), but it was the most common (400 out of 650) used by the RAAF (I just found this out thanks to Felix, in another topic).
I especially like this 'vintage' of Spit (form the Mk1 to the IX) as I don't like the bubble canopy either. I'm led to beleive that the RAAF Spits also had two .50 cal guns on each wing as opposed to the standard .30's on most British planes. This I think would have made a substantial difference to the 'hitting power' of the RAAF MkVIII.

Some pilots considered the MkVIII to be the nicest of all Spits to fly also. It had a fully retractable tail wheel and I think this added to it's looks and I understand about 5 mph in top speed.
Most MkVIII's served outside the UK, many in Italy and in the Pacific theater.
As for the "E" wing with two .50's replacing the 4 .30 cals, I can't say I've come across this loadout being fitted to the MkVIII as most had the "C" wing with 2x 20mm and 4 x .30 cal. Many MkIX's/XVI's and XIV's had "E" wings so I imagine it would have found its way onto the MkVIII but I think it more likely that this was an in the field modification.

Paul - admit it, it's easier to for you to say that there is just ONE mark of a Seafire that is not your favorite. (and that one was banned from carrier duty and relegated to second-line service very quickly.

It could have been the 45 - I think it had problems with too much power in the Griffon engine until the 47 got it "right".

Hi Felix
OK, I am with you now, my friend.
Yes, I believe that the F45 was a navalised version of the Spitfire F.21 yet it never performed as well as the F.21 from which it was developed.

Rechecked my source - it was the F. XV with the Griffon engine. Prohibited from embarked flying in mid-1946. The 45 wasn't that much better.

I like the Mk V most, too. it´s nice with with rounded winglets. I´ve only seen one, on an Airshow in Höxter-Holzminden, very nice there.
http://www.oldtimer-airshow.de/gallery/image_WB-HX11_28.jpg.html
There were also some Yaks, A Mustang (The Old Crow), A Corsair, a B-25, a Ju-52, two Texans in Red Bull livery and some Stampe Biplanes, i may have forgotten sth. but it was very nice. On the Site there are all the pics.

Not quite. The Mk1a. With the bubble canopy and three bladed prop. And 8 .303 machine guns.
Although, having said that, the prototype did look kinda cool.

From a modelling point of view the Trop MkV makes a very nice subject but in real live the large Vokes filter degraded the performance quite badly and a smaller filter was devised to replace it on later models.

To add to the thread..........
All the MkVIII's were fitted with standard "C" wings, no evidence of "E" or others. So I assume 20mm cannon were fitted.
Any/ all the Merlins were "classics"

I never could get on with the Occidental kit, nose profile looks like a PR XI. I do like the Hasegawa Spit IX in 1/48 scale but I guess that too has its faults.
I'd love to see a pic however so if you follow the instructions in this link you should be able to post a pic.

So Tempest, you should then know how mant times my occidental almost took a test flight across the room!!!!
I did a bit of modifying, and added a true details cockpit kit in which I put 53 hours into. It is the first time I have re-positioned flaps, ect. I am going to try to put it in.
Letss keep the fingers, (and rudders...hehehe) crossed.

wow, I can't believe the quality of the pics even after downsizing them!!
Well, here ya go. This Johny Johnson's personal MKIX. This is the one he flew while comanding my grandfather.
My Grandfather flew with JJ, Buzz Buerling, and Lorne Cameron.
It was a pain staking process as this is NOT a very good fitting kit. Alot of mods were needed to fulfill my taste. The spinner and prop blades were not accurate so I scratchbuilt them myself carving them out of plastic stock. The wheels were repoured and moulded with resin by me. The plane was airbrushed with acrylics, and weathered with oils. I had the decals custom made for me by a company out of Ottawa, Canada. Arrow Graphics. They did a great job. Not to mention I had some great reference material. On and Off it took almost 2 yrs to build. I have 30 some odd other models.....crying out to me so when I got frusterated...I switched up. This is the first time I have shown ANY public eyes so please be gentle with the expert critisicism...
Enjoy

If you think the Occidental kit is bad, try the ICM kit
Love the pics. I can see how it took so long to build. Interior looks stunning, much more detail than I usually bother with.
James Edgar "Jonnie" Johnson is a hero of mine. I was lucky enough to meet him once. As a future project of mine I'm going to build all of Johnsons MkIXs including the infamous JE-J jr, the plane that "never existed". This aircraft will be complete with beer barrels and will be the first of my Johnson MkIXs.

Thank you for the compliments. Cockpits have always been my true sweat and blood. I will wire the instruments, I even use guitar string for my O2 hose.
I even have individual seatbelt mechanisms I will put in. But I was happy with the outcome. Johnny is one of the best. That would be a great tribute to him. The next one I am going to do is Hasagawa's MKVc. I want to do it in the colors and marking's of George "BUZZ" Buerling while he was known as the Falcon of Malta. He was a Canadian from Quebec and shot down 27 planes in 14 days in combat in Malta stationed at Takali.Finished the war with 31 1/3 kills, one of the top allied aces. Actually was comanded by Johnny as well. Flew with my grandfather.
Anyone good with research photos he flew the MKVc, coded TZ BR135 Except for his book "HERO" awsome read for all you spit fans.......
...I can't find to many pics of it. Even my grandfather doesn't have any.

I can only find reference to two Spits flow by Beurling on Malta. MkVb (Trop) EP706 with No.249 Sqdr. coded TL. I have reference for this aircraft in standard desert scheme (Mid stone, dark earth over Azure blue) and in overall "dark" blue over Azure blue. The second aircraft is MkVc (Trop) BR301 and I have this pic:
Tamiya 1/48 Spit Vb (Trop) built as Vc (Trop) BR301 of 249 Squadron, Malta, July 1942.
I didn't build this; this is a pic I found whilst trying to find info on Blue Malta Spits for one of my projects about a year ago. Info on Malta’s Spits is very thin on the ground and it is very hard to pin down colour schemes used. Good luck with the project.

Use the same [img] brackets round it as for posting your images. You obviously figured that out. If I type the whole thing here it will show up just like Woody's example.

Thanks hagar and woody......um...ya....it wasn't that hard to figure out eh..
.....LOL
Thanks Tempest, I found that pic last night as well. A lot more is on the net about him now. I also found decals for 5 of his planes. I also found one for you......
Spitfire #38 is a MK.IXe "MK329" flown by Wing Commander J.E. Johnnie Johnson of No. 144 Wing during summer 1944 from St. Croix-sur-Mer and it's paint scheme was Dark Green/Ocean Grey over Medium Sea Grey with a fuselage band and spinner in sky. This is the famous "JEJ Jr" that was used to ferry beer kegs for Squadron parties.....kegs were held on hard points under the wing(s). Plane was created from spares from wrecks.

Hi Merlin. Not sure if you knew this or not but it works GREAT in FS9...
8).....oh and it is flying over Malta
Thought it would be appropriate.
Do you think it will work in CFS 1?? or CFS 3 ??
Cheers

Certainly will not work in CFS3 as that has a totally new engine. I would doubt it will work in CFS1 but you could always try. Works just fine in 2K2 and FS9.
CFS3 has its own version however...

I assume this is a Gmax (or FSDS2) model. In this case it will NOT be compatible with CFS1.

The screen shot of T-N look great!!
All the YAS models are FSDS2.24, so not designed for CFS1 or CFS3. I'm in the process of preparing a Tr9 version for FS2004. You'll be able to take your partner along any enjoy! There will be at least two versions, Dutch and Irish.
I've offered Ozzy a "special"!!!

Why thank you. Unfortunatley, being a paramedic and going to flight school doesn't leave much time for flying. I took thoose just before I posted that, and I was going to use those in the screenshot contest.........but alas...............I am CMT and when I looked at the time it was 18: 27 CMT.......00:27 GMT....
Well, there is always next month right??!!
