hope you friendly chaps can help,im flying the cessna in creating a flight and was hoping you guys could elaborate on what vor is/does,does vor navigation direct you to the airport?? any comments wud be helpful regards the doctor of death

Smarty pants thing first - Very high frequency Omni Ranging.

The VOR is a nav aid you can tune in on to get your bearings.  Tune you radio to the frequency and when your Appox 30 miles within range you VOR needle will point to the beacon, you can then fly towards it and hopefully get where your going.

Its much more though, because you can use the VOR for your ILS landings to make those all important smooth touchdowns.  Your instruments can very cleverly work out your hieght and distance so you can adjust you rate of descent.

You can try the VOR lesson in the LEARN TO FLY SECTION under Private Pilot .
Or........for a very simple introduction, try this.
-Under CREATE FLIGHT
-SELECT:
     The B58 Baron
     Beckley, West Virginia (KBKW)
     Daytime
     Clear weather
When you get there select NAV2 to 117.7(That's far right second from the top, after you click on the NAV radio   Icon). On the lower left of the instrument panel, you will see a gauge with two needles, one yellow, and one green. The green one is the one you'll need to watch. This instrument is an RMI. When you takeoff, fly away from the airport for 2-4 minutes, and then turn around. You will find, that if you center the green needle(arrow head at the 12o'clock position) it will point you back to the airport. If you fly down low, you'll find that as you pass the airport again, if you keep the needle centered, you will pass over a building with what looks like a bowling pin mounted on it. This is the VOR. Beckley is a High Altitude VOR. You will recieve "course guidance" (a signal)up to 40 miles away, above 14,500 feet 100nm, and above 18,000 feet 130nm.

so it really is that easy, just got to set one of ur NAV radios to a VOR frequency, line the needle up to twelve o'clock and thats it?

When using an RMI.................yes.  Wink

I don't understand why they DON'T begin instruction on VORs with this instrument.  Undecided

think about it...........

A) course, radial, heading to join, CDI, ambiguity indicator, compass rose, course selector or...........

B) follow the needle............ Roll Eyes

just remember, this is a BASIC use of the VOR. This is HOMING at it's simplest.   Obviously, when using an HSI or VOR/ILS indicator, there are more factors.  But.....I think using the RMI is the best way to introduce someone to VOR basics. Unfortunately, in real life, most light singles don't have an RMI?!
Sad  When you try this, as you turn towards the airport, and center the point of the needle with the aircraft pointed directly at the airport, pause the simulation. Now make note of the HEADING at the top of the compass rose on the RMI. This is your course TO the station. If you read the number at the bottom(tail of the needle), this is your radial FROM the station. This is the next  step in VOR basics, and very important..........this is the only time when your COURSE and HEADING, are the same. These two terms, are the two most often confused. If you could stop your airplane at this point, and pivot it through 360 degrees of HEADING (all the way 'round), your COURSE would NOT change!
