There's a tow gauge for gliders, simulating a cable tow start from the ground by Rob Barendregt, over at Avsim (search for rcbgc-10.zip)

Otherwise just go into slew mode (Y key toggles on/off) In slew mode F4 makes you rise, F1 makes you fall, F2 stops you doing either.

But remember if you slew to 4000 ft and hit the Y key you won't have any airspeed, so you'll need to pitch down until you've got enough spped under your belt
