One of the Staten Island Ferrys had some sort of explosion around 5:00 Easteren time today. 10 dead, many injured

Just heard about this on BBC radio. The ferry appears to have collided with a pier. A terrible accident but I've seen no reports of an explosion. Unfortunately these things can happen anywhere.

My sympathies to the victims & their families & the people of NYC. Cry

) I do sometimes tend to be a cynic.

It seems there are not too many fatalies for which I am thankful but still not a very nice event.

Actually he jumped ship, went home, took a bath, slit his wrists, and THEN shot himself with what they called "a high-powered pellet gun."

I think thats very inconsiderate.

I think that suicide is a terrible thing if it is intended.

There are people who jump in front of the trains to commit suicide and it holds everything up. What all the people he knows how do they feel?

Suicide used to be seen as full acceptance of responsibility & the only honourable way out for an officer & gentleman. It's impossible to comment on this sad event without knowing the full facts.

I'm not sure what you mean, but several years ago I was riding the Metra into downtown Chicago when a guy actually did jump in front of the train. I was looking out of the front window (the trains go backwards heading into downtown, so the last car has windows in the front) and this guy simply stepped out from behind a bridge abutment, layed down on the tracks, and let the train roll over him. People were complaining about how they were going to miss the ball game they were going to, and I told them I'm sure if he could he would reimburse them for the tickets.

To think that a little thing little thing like our personal time is more important than a person's life is wrong. As civilized people, it is our duty to ease people's suffering whenever we can. If that man's suffering was so bad that he felt the only way out was suicide, (both the boat captain and the guy I saw) then we as a society have failed them, and not they failed us.

I'm sorry but I'm staying put on this subject. Suicide is wrong. Its a sin fro my religion. I was put on this earth by God and I will be taken away by God.

To me its the easy way out, not facing up to responsibility. If he feels hes sorry for killing 14 people then spend your life trying to save 14 more people to give back what you've taken away.

Just an opinion, if you disagree then I'm sorry.

I didn't say suicide was right. I said that we may pity them or we may try to help them, but to blame them for an inconvenience is wrong...

I just don't think that in any circumstance suicide can be justifed. I do pity them but I also pity anyone else involved. It can be traumatising knowing a person who commited suicide.

Crumbso. I suspect you speak from personal experience. If so, I don't want to know the details. People have different ideas on this, that's all. As I said, not so long ago, suicide was an honourable thing to do in some circumstances. If you've seen the film "Battle of the River Plate" Captain Langsdorff followed his own code of honour by shooting himself in his cabin. Things seem very clear-cut at your age. When you've been around a while it gets a tad fuzzy. Wink
