Technically this belongs in the hardware forum but I wanted more people to see this.
The people at Guru3d.com have discovered a potention problem with the leaked Nvidia 51.13 drivers. Apparently there is a glitch in the driver that manages power feed to the card's fan. Here's what Guru3d had to say.
Quote:
If you have been snooping around in our forums you might have noticed that Detonator drivers 52.13 have leaked onto the web and they are for real. However, these drivers might NOT BE SAFE to use as far as we are concerned !

As part of our procedure before making a driver life (virus/trojan checking and testing the actual driver) we ran some tests on them with a 5900 Ultra. The minute a Direct3D scene is rendered the active fan will stop spinning. The game then exits with an error-code from NVIDIA 'Sentinel error - and something with power'. This bug might be very card specific, be warned ! And if you do decide to try them out watch that fan and make sure. Whatever you do, you do it at your own risk, don't go complain to NVIDIA or us if things go wrong ! You have been warned.

The way I read this is that this problem only occures with cards with fans. However you should roll back to the 45.23 drivers just to be safe. For all we know this problem could also be overloading the GPU, and a heatsink isn't going to help much if that happens. Beta drivers are dangerous to use and this proves it. Let the professionals at Nvidia work out the bugs first before even thinking about downloading.

I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday. I was more than a little concerned when the GPU fan on my FX5600 simply stopped after installing these drivers!!!  Shocked

Thankfully, the card has "Smart Monitor", this seems to have averted any overheating problem by promptly warning me of the stoppage.

In the "Smart Monitor" (Which comes as part of the Asus software bundle) you have an option to set the fans speed.

Setting this to its fastest settings resulted in the fan audiably spinning back up to speed and my problems went away!  Smiley

Owners of Asus FX cards check this out other card users will have to see if they have similar fan control software as part of the cards drivers etc.

Not a guaranteed fix by any means, but it certainly works for me & my Asus.

Hope this is of some use to others......

Paul.
