I unzipped an aircraft file, then upzipped the gauges file separately, moved the "gauges" into the aircraft folder and then moved the folder into fs aircraft folder. The aircraft shows up but without gauges. What did I do wrong?

First off, welcome to SimV! The most friendly Flight Sim site on the net!!!

When you unzip an aircraft and it has a gauges folder with it, they all go into the gauges folder inside the main FS folder. Just select all and copy over to the GAUGES folder. DO NOT OVERWRITE if prompted! It may mess up some gauges already in the FS system. Just click no if asked.

That's it! Do this for all aircraft you download, and everything should work out fine.
