Just curious if anyone has ever created or thought of creating the Middle-Earth scenery from The Lord of the Rings? It certainly would be a challenge!

As long as you could use GMAX to design the winged Nazgul, or Gwaihir the Windlord to fly over it!

Now are you talking about the actual stuff that is there such as Hobbitton? Or are you talking about things like Helm's Deep or Saruman's Tower?

I would personally love to fly over Gondor or Mordor. For that matter, Lothlorien or Rivendell too. The Shire would be great...

The problem is finding a big enough surface area without any airports, and with a wide enough range of climate to take in the world of Middle Earth. New Zealand would fit that last one, but I don't know of any even remote areas that are large enough, and with no airstrips.

What? You wouldn't want to fly from Hobbiton Muni (KHBT) to Rivendell Intl (KRVD) with a stopover at Bree (KBRE)?

You have to be careful at Minas Morgul Skyport (KSAU), 'cos those mountains are really hard to negotiate (ask Frodo!)

LMAO!! Okay, so where do we put this place? New Zealand is still my top choice, for pretty obvious reasons, but its still too small. Something the size of Australia would be better, but it doesn't have enough native terrain types to do this.
I suppose it could just have everything viewed in the movies, just a little closer together. ???

The outback might be better. More open area. Come to think of it, S. America might work as well as The Urals in Russia. Western China, Northern Canada...

Okay, so lets spread Middle Earth around the real Earth:
The Shire goes in New Zealand.
Mordor could end up in either Australia or Russia (I'll have to take a tour).
Rivendell can sit in a South American rainforest.
I'm not sure about Bree, but as its not much to look at anyway, I think we can skip it for now.
Helm's Deep (what I would really like to see) might be somewhere in the midwestern US, with all its sweeping, open plains.
Its been almost six months since I've seen either of the movies or read any of the books, so tell me what areas I have missed.

If you divide the areas up into major or minor areas, this is what I get. I may have forgotten some, my priorities may be off on others. Looking at it, probably a series of releases would be best as opposed to a lump sum. If someone would be willing to work with me, I would learn scenery design to do this project...
Major Areas
The Shire
Hobbiton
Rivendell
Lothlorien
Edoras
Helm’s Deep
Isengard
The Argonath
Minas Tirith
Osgiliath
Minas Morgul
Mount Doom
Barad-Dur
The Black Gate
Dale
The Lonely Mountain
Minor Areas
Bree
Bywater
Weathertop
The Midgewater Marches
Caradras
The Moria Gate
The Khazad-dum Gate
The Falls of Rauros
Parth Galen
Emyn Muil
The Dead Marshes
The Old Forest
Fangorn
The Grey Havens

To be perfectly honest, I have fiddled with Gmax a bit, but not enough to work on my own...

HEHE!! We're in the same boat, man! I know jack about scenery design, but I know that if this is to be done, the basic terrain mesh of the sim would have to be drastically altered, or we would have to at least spend a mass amount of time scouting out the right spots!
Okay, since I'm not very good at putting the names of the places in LOTR with the actual scenes in the movie, or the parts in the book, why don't you give me a list of the names with approximate places I can find the visuals in Fellowship. I have it on DVD and can scan through it to find what we need. After that, I'll start scouting the world for good spots for each.
Then later, we'll see what you DO know about Gmax, and go from there.

What you need is a map of Middle-Earth, and design around that. Middle-Earth always reminded me of a rough map of Europe (or am I trying to read too much into it?), and you can find it in the LOTR printed edition. If you located it in central Russia or somewhere vast and open, you could more or less design as you want, using things like TerraBuilder and Coastline Maker to construct a Middle Earth 'island' in the middle of nowhere. That way, you'd have all of the terrain in the same place, and you could design as fits.
Sounds easy, huh. BTW I've never used these progs (yet), but they's free and available - just do a Google.

I would say you're definitly not reading too much into it. Tolkien based Middle-Earth on Great Britain.
The best two maps I can find of Middle-Earth are here:
http://www.taylorcustom.com/localinks/mearth/mearthmap.html
and a clickable version here:

The trick is converting the maps of Middle Earth to DEM and then finding somewhere big enough to put a new continent. I would suggest that a new install of the FS used and then remove the real world data and put in middle earth data. The Silmarillion has maps of much more than the later trilogy. This would be a truley massive project. I've read throught the SDK on the subject and it is utterly greek to me. Any help appreciated, and count me in!

I think that until I actually learn scenery design I would be useless. However, without bragging or trying to make myself seem important, I probably know Tolkien better than anyone who visits these forums. I have been a devoted fan of the books since high school. The Silmarillion maps are ok, but it is actually only loosely connected with the events in the The Lord of the Rings. It is based on it and actually is an older work because Tolkien worked on it periodically his entire life. However, they do not match up completely with the later series and some of the events and locations are totally off.

My point was that they display more of the "world" not just the main continent. I think that if this is to be done it may as well be done in its entirety(sp?) and not just the bit from the trilogy. I first read the books when I was 13, which is 17 years ago. I bow down to your greater knowledge and wisdom though Pippin as you are substantially older and more grizzled than I

Right. I've read the SDK's. I've searched the internet. I've sat quietly and cried tears of frustration whilst rocking back and forth banging my head against a wall and I still cannot fathom how you write DEM data that the flight sim can understand.
I was planning on starting small and building the Tower of Isengard and putting it in Chicago for Pippin. I was going to put a Mordor mountain range in the outback.

Try building in cfs2, or cfs3 lots of non theatre areas with no airports. And wide open spaces, perhaps a few cities but they are painted onto terrain hexes. if one is in the way plop a volcano on top of it. The graphics for the combat sims are not as good, but the ability to, build missions where you could take part in the "Air" parts of the epic battles, would let you get the most out of the scenery.

Also the scenery design tools are fairly easy to learn most are avalible here at Simviation. FSDS can design and built scenery macros, as well as aircraft.

Middle earth is supposed to be based on the Lake District. So just scale that up and put it in a box some where above the pacific....

At the beginning or end of a lot of the old books there are maps. But they are small and in Black and white but they give you a good idea of places.
Some say my pinky toe was replaced with a fountain pen, and that I love to ride on nuclear bombs with a saddle. All I know is.... I'm called THE STIG!!!!

It sounds strange "Nazgul November 2556 turn left 175 continue own navigation" or "Cessna November 7002 follow Nazgul on final" or "Nazgul November 2556 turn next taxiway"... Ok I will stop now.

Sure. Just download FSSC (Flight Simulator Scenery Creator) and go through the tutorials. It tells you exactly how to create an island in the ocean, anywhere in the world.

Well, I finally gave in.
I'm in the middle of an FS reinstall, but afterwards, I'm finishing up Isengard. At least, I think so . . . ???
I'm just going to make an island (500 miles square) with Sauruman's Tower on it. I probably won't upload until I get Isengard completed, but I'm working on it . . .

Okay, I want to know how large the MAIN continent of Middle Earth is.
What maps should I use? (I've found about five or six so far that don't match up)
