How do I do it?  I already tried downloading Texporter and Peter Watje's Unwrap Util, but neither one would initialize when I started up Gmax.  I put them in the plugins folder, and got a message saying they failed to initialize.

So what's the usual method?  Am I a dim bulb?

Hmmm. Could be they need Visual Basic runtime files. Check the read me's that came with the programs.  Check your installation of the programs. Make sure gmax knows where they are. Find another converter program to do the job, Martin Wright  of MWgraphics has several converters on his site for free download(He also has the runtime files to run the programs). There are also several converter programs in the design archives here at Simviation.

I don't use gmax and  don't know the 2 programs you mentioned, but hopfully one of the suggestions above will help.

Pendercafts.com Downloads for Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, addons for FS2002 and FS2004 and videos too

I would suspect that Peter Watje's plugin just works for 3dsMax and not Gmax. I'm not familiar with the other plugin. Gmax has a UVW unwrap modifier already built into it.

What are you trying to do with the texture? I can't promise another mini-tutorial since I'm busy packing for a 1,000 mile move, but I'll do what I can to help.

Multi-material UVW Mapping

"A not so beginners guide to making an object and texturing it in GMAX." - or so Joe says. A simple object - a box - is made, mapped and textured, and even Inspector Poly finally could do it himself

This is the tutorial that made UVW mapping in gmax make some sense to me.

How do I get a muti-material in Gmax?  I have done it once by accident, so I know its possible.

Probably some simple answer that I should already know . . . Roll Eyes

It's in the Binka tutorial, but basically, when you open the material editor, you choose between "standard" or "multi-"

I'm pretty sure Joe Binka was using a different version of Gmax when he made his tutorial.

Here's what I get right after I open the material editor:

...

And here's what I get when press "new":

...

I do have other materials already in the scene, but I can't seem to figure out how I got the multi-material before.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You're using pre-gmax 1.2.

Applying mutliple materials in gmax 1.1 is a slightly more complicated function - it's in the help files, but the way I see it, you have to apply a mesh select, choose a renderable sub-object (ie polygons) and apply the material to the chosen polygons.

<g>  If you have FS9, load up gmax 1.2 from CD#1  Wink
