You're out of luck.

It'll be easier building from scratch.  The newer models - the work with FS9 - can't be decompiled.

You're not going to learn how they operate from decompiling the mdl file - you get just an unanimated, untextured mesh.

If your purpose is to find out how a model is animated, mapped, etc., you're better off downloading a source file from the FFDS site, popping it into the appropriate program (FSDS or gmax) and playing around with it yourself.

If you want to know the available information of the MDL file structure, avail yourself of the MDLfile SDK.

I've got a solution for you! If you open the samples that come with FS2002(Gmax files, but ready for MDL exporting ) than it's exactly like opening an MDL. FS2002/gmax/samples.
