I recieved an email today from my internet service provider warning me of hackers. They told me that I should install the the Windows security updates. This included the Service Pack 1. When I restarted my machine, the OS started telling me that it couldn't log on because it couldn't find something in the SHLWAPI dll and it couldn't find the msgina.dll. I installed another copy of windows on another partition and checked the old copy, both these files are there. What the hell is going on here!

Orenda the SP1 pack is a nightmare. It cause me loads of trouble, so I re-formatted my HD and re-installed XP from scratch. Also the patch that M$ put out the other week against those nice viruses lets them in through a back door and I got infected! Fortunately my anti-virus software is bang up to date!
Best advice, run XP in its raw state, and add a decent firewall and anti-virus software, and you'll be fine.

I have to agree with Ozzy on this matter, I have never downloaded any of the Windows updates and I've not had any problems at all so far, I do run a firewall in stealth mode and keep my Anti-virus program up to date.
I read so much about people having problems with their machines after adding the microsoft updates that I chose to avoid them entirely.

My XP OS is current in security patches and I check for updates daily.
No problem with the updates.
See MS Knowlede Base Article 318378 for some reinstall or repair recommendations.

I got my computer fixed. It turned out to be two viruses that NAV never picked up.  Angry
