I recently downloaded Crusaders II by Richard Steele and was enjoying playing it until I got to Mission 4, Which equals Cru5 file in the campaign.  I received a message that either the file is corrupt or was not properly formatted.  I used notepad to look at Cru5, and compared it to Cru4, and Cru6, both of which work fine.  However, I do not have the technical know-how to determine if anything is wrong.  Everything I looked at looked ok.  I even tried downloading CrusadersII again and ran it and the same thing happens at Cru5.  Can anybody help?  Many thanks.

I just put "Cru-5 To Hell and back" in my mission folder and flew it without any problems.
Did any extra information show up in the error.LOG?

Hi Mike,

The wording I get when I try to run Cru5 in either Campaign or as a Single Mission is as follows:
Error loading mission file.  Either mission file is corrupt
   or formatted improperly.

As I stated when I posted this problem, I could not find anything out of the ordinary when I looked at the specifics of the file.  However, I do not profess to have a
great deal of knowledge in this.  Would it be possible for you to upload me a copy of your Cru5 file and I will try pasting it into my CFS1?

Many thanks,

Ty

Ty,

Sure, drop me a line at mikencfs@aol.com and I'll sent it.
But this sounds like a problem other than a bad mission file.

The error.LOG file that I'm talking about is located in your main CFS folder.
Scroll down to find it and open it in notepad.
It usually will give you some extra information on the problem.

Ty. This error message is almost always caused by a missing or incorrectly installed aircraft. You should find a file named Error.LOG in your main CFS1 folder. Open it in Notepad & copy/paste the text into your next post. I'll download the campaign & see if we can fix it. If more than one element is missing this could take some time.

Meanwhile, read the install intructions with the campaign carefully & make sure you have all the aircraft & installed them properly. Some campaigns require you to download aircraft & other elements separately.

Thanks, Hagar.

I knew what I wanted to say but couldn't get it out.
It's almost always an aircraft problem and the info in the error.log should tell us.

Listen to this man, Ty.

Sorry Mike. Our last replies clashed & I didn't mean to interfere. I'm downloading the campaign right now & I'm sure we can soon fix this between us. The most likely cause is a 3rd party aircraft that is used for the first time in mission Cru5. Find that & we have the culprit. Wink

Here's a few tips for installing campaigns or anything else for that matter.
1. If you're using WinZip make sure you have a current version (WinZip 7.0 or later.). Some AI only aircraft have empty Panel & Sound folders which early versions of WinZip will not extract. All aircraft must have Panel/Sound folders to work, even if they're empty.
2. Make sure the WinZip "Use Folder Names" option is checked.
3. Ignore all instructions to unzip files direct to the sim. Unzip the files to a Temp folder & paste them in manually.

In my experience, these are the cause of most installation problems.

OK Ty. After a quick peek at the first 5 missions I think I found the culprit. Please check out the Ju88gdr aircraft included with the mission. This is used for the first time in mission Cru-5. I suspect yours has no Panel folder. Creating a new folder & renaming it Panel should fix it. Alternatively, copy/paste the Panel folder from another aircraft.

I would have to install CFS1 to check this out properly.

Ha ha ha...

Beat me to it again.
I just did the same thing, going through the missions to see which aircraft first appeared in Cru-5.
Ju88gdr.

Many thanks guys,

I just completed putting the panel folder in the Ju88gdr aircraft and copied the file to Single Missions to see how it worked.  It worked without a hitch!  Thank you for taking the time to help an old novice who loves to fly.

Great. You will know what to look for next time. Wink

I suspect you have an early 16 bit version of WinZip which won't extract those empty folders. Try the latest free version here. http://www.winzip.com/ddchomea.htm
