I know that in Europe it is common for people to know multiple languages, I was wondering what languages everyone knows, besides English as this is obvious.
I have always wanted to learn spanish, it seems it would be the most useful second language here in the states due to the large number of hispanics that live here.
But I don't have a learn spanish program right now, (I do know a little, damn little.)
However, I do happen to have a learn German and a learn Italian program, does anyone speak these two languages and which is easier to learn?
(even though either of these languages would be for the most part useless to me, might be fun anyway.)
If you speak German, Italian and Spanish, which is the easiest of the three?

I used to be able to speak French but that was a long time ago. I've forgotten most of it by now.
I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.

Very interesting, so I can gather from this response that many languages are very similar to each other, how does English fit into these comparisons? (besides Ace's reference to German.)
Because this is the only language I know and I don't understand diddly that is spoken in a foreign tongue, not even close.
As far as my abilities in Spanish, I've got a spanish vocabulary of about 20 words, maybe a few more than that, not counting the numbers 1-9.
For the most part it seems Spanish is spoken so fast, I can't even catch the words I am familiar with.
We have the most exposure to spanish around here, there are always Mexicans around, and there are Spanish stations on TV.
There are 3 or 4 Russians where I work, and when they are together they speak Russian.

I can speak a little French and a little German. Enough that if a French or German person speaks very slowly I can understand them - just.
I once worked in a petrol station and a Lithuanian truck driver came in. Neither of us spoke the others language but we managed to communicate in very bad German. We ended up having a cup of tea. He was one of those people that make having a bad job worthwhile occasionally. My written German and French is appalling tho' see Silent Exploder for details LOL.

I speak all the major forms of English (American, Australian, Kiwi, Cockney etc).
I also speak Hungarian ('cos the wifes family don't speak English
), some Dutch (have a lot of friends there, but I'm getting rusty, must chat to Ivan about this...), and I have a smattering of German, French, Czech, Croat, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, and Irish Gaelic (I can get drunk, get a bag of chips, swear, and get my leg over in all these languages, I suppose thats a fairly high standard of fluency, everything else is just decoration
).
I just pick things up in my travels. Does Latin count as its a dead language? 'Cos I know a fair bit of that....

I started playing around with the Italian program, I'm a bit surprised how much like spanish it is, I only know a little spanish, but enough to already see the similarities between the two languages.
I am looking on Ebay for a learn spanish program, that would be much more useful to me, considering we have spanish radio, TV stations and plenty of spanish speaking people around here.
But I'm having fun with the Italian anyway.

I have a program for German, but I figure I'd better stick to learning one language at a time, and from what some of these guys are saying German is more difficult to grasp than Italian, and since Spanish is actually my #1 choice, Italian is a good #2.

My whole entire family is Hispanic (Nicaragua) and my family is HUGE!!!!! So huge, in fact, that's it's impossible to keep them all in one small location. So, they had no choice but to spread all around the Western Hemisphere. lol
My dad used to travel so much around the world, as a business, that he learned a little bit of German, Saudi Arabian, Venezuelan, and nearly a dozen more other languages in nearly a dozen countries.
My Uncle is still in the Army and he used to be in Germany as well. I have an uncle who's an actual pilot (with an intrument rating) and used to be in cuba for some time.
I can go on with the list of all the other people in my family, but my fingers will get tired by the time I am even half way done. LOL
Yo hablo Ingles (cien porciento), un poco de Aleman, y todo de Espanol. Y si vo no me crees, salite de aqui y nunca me hablas. HAHAHAHAHAHA

I do speak enough Spanish to get myself in or out of trouble, depending upon the situation, but not as much as I'd like to know.
As for German, I'm from a VERY German family (dad was born there), and I've heard German spoken at various family events, however I've never been able to pick it up. (I've tried!)
For Paz, however, the question was posed "Which is easier, German, Spanish, or Italian?"
Spanish and Italian are very, very similar. (Lot's of "idioms", as they say.) German is completely different. For me, German is much more difficult than Spanish.
I'd really love to learn Russian, to be honest. There's just something about the language that fascinates me.

Smoke wondered how long it would take for someone to pick up on that one.
Only 3 days.

At one time I knew enough Spanish that I could have probably been OK if I had to use it (and not just Mexican/S. American spanish, but the spanish also spoken in Spain-for those who don't know Spain has a slightly different spanish). But I don't think I was fluient by any means-and its been so long that I have forgotten most of it.

Well thanks for admitting it's you who's lost the plot Ken, at least I can follow cartoons all TOO often. it's current affairs I have prolems with, probably on account of not being allowed to watch the television when her ladyship is around.
