Denver International Airport- My home base for flying- today opened the longest  runway in North America and the 4th longest ILS equipped in the world.

It's 16,000 ft long and 300 ft wide- it'll accomodate the A380 and will help jumbos and heavies get out of mile-high Denver on hot days.  It cost  $165 million and will be 34L/16R.   The first Commercial flight was today and it was a UAL 777.

Thats great and all, but who cares, let the A380s crash and then ruin their record after an idiot test pilot puts one down in the atlantic and then they all go boom! yay! But thank god, it would help a lot for those long long takeoffs from that place and make for easy landings. Cheesy

I don't know if it;s in ACOF- but the rwy was included in the original plan, but put off a few years- so MS may have have included it thinking that it would open soon enogh.  I used to have a scenery add-on that had the 6th rway.

Saratoga- I'm looking for the longest rway in the world.

saratoga, wanting any aircraft to crash is a little harsh, even if it is an airbus, i would love to see it be a big flop but for one to crash, nah

Found it!  The World's longest runway is at Edwards AFB in California, however, it is unpaved and non-ILS equipped.  The RWY at Edwards is 7.5 miles long, or about 40, 000 feet.  It's used to land the shuttle.

After seeing another article, I must revise my facts- the new DIA runway is the longest ILS-equipped paved runway in THE WORLD!!   It is fouth longest in paved runways, but those above it are not ILS equipped nor do they have commercial airline use.

My source for the above and a list of the top five: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_2062606,00.ht...

That makes sense; the longest runway in the world being at Edwards. It's been the premiere research and test flight base in the U.S. for the last half century. It's where all the early rocket-plane R&D took place in the U.S. .....where the Bell X-1 flew faster than sound (the base was called Muroc back then), and the X-15 was tested.

Check this site for a brief history of Edwards....

For a flying boat, the longest runway is RWY 36/18 Pacific Ocean ...  not ILS - or anything else - equipped..

Did you know that one of the runways at YSSY (Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport, Sydney, Australia) was subsidised by the US Government to be the longest runway in the Southern hemiphere?

Why?

So they could land the shuttle there if they ever needed to! Now that I would love to see!  Grin
