I regularly install these meshes for the USA in my FS 2002 program...
Quote:
***************************************
FS2000 30m Terrain Mesh for the continental USA, including Alaska.
Converted & compiled by Stephen Rothlisberger
Introduction:
These are scenery files for FS2000 only. The entire continental USA is
covered in 53 geographical sections. Alaska is one section, but is split
up into 11 parts to simplify downloading.

The resolution of these files is one arc-second, or 30m. However, see
http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/glis/hyper/guide/1_dgr_dem for a discussion on
the relative accuracy of the source data.
These scenery files were generated from original USGS (United States
Geological Survey) DEM data downloaded from
ftp://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/DEM/250. The complete scenery set is
about 490MB.
*******************************************
End Quote.

Does anyone know if a similar type of set is available for Great Britain, and maybe for Contenental Europe, split up into regions like the USA set...?
The USA sets produce ACCURATE mountainous areas of the sort which appear in relief maps...
Below is a typical example of the coverage for the San Francisco area...
I use these meshes for the whole of the California coast-line, and they really are amazingly accurate, based on my relief maps of the areas... Grin...!

...

...anything to make the Great Britain landscape look more accurate.... Wink....LOL...!

Cheers all...!

I know you are on dial up, PM me and I'll sort something for you.

Paul that is the shareware demo. I'll send you the full European free one (hope I can squeeze it onto one CD), it covers Iceland to Turkey, including some odd ones like Estonia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and other popular non-tourist destinations Grin

Hey Scott, I downloaded the entire mesh for Alaska! I did not notice a frame rate hit. I do know that they are pretty accurate in terms of mountains, cliffs, lakes etc....
I flew through a mountain range without the mesh, then did it with the mesh and notice much higher mountain tops, deeper canyons and alot more variables in the lanscape!
Hope this helps!

Scott what a mesh does is correct the vertical settings of the terrain.
So lets say the French Spanish border region, in standard FS its flat and rather boring. Once the correcting mesh is added, there's lots of lovely mountains to fly around, just like in real life Grin
As for framerates, no effect. It doesn't change the scenery, just alters its height.

As you can imagine Australia is basically flat but terrain mesh makes a difference even there.

So it's off around the world again adding mesh as I go! Should be great!! Smiley

Hi there:

as mentioned in the other recent mesh post, Nanuq Faitman makes very detailed freeware terrain meshes of Europe and northern Africa. Here's the direct link to his site, which includes UK/Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc.
