I went looking at speakers recently and while trying to maintain my dignity and explain to the salesman at the same time why I couldn't buy a $5000 set and what did he have for around $2000, he happened to mention a set he had that ran $24,000.
Now, my curiosity was aroused and I explained to the guy I just HAD to hear what a $24,000 set of speakers sounded like. I was in awe.
Then he really got me. These were the 'cheap' set. The same company makes a set that runs $80,000. Let me say that again. An $80,000 set of speakers. My god! That is the price of a house!
Appropriately enough, the speakers are called Pipedreams by Nearfield Accoustics.

There is no way that anyone could need or want a £50K pair of speakers, the difference in sound quality can't be worth £47K

now now... as an audio/video specialist at my church for many years i have encountered many different speaker solutions. however I would have to say that you would have to be crazy to spend that much money on speakers!
are you sure they didn't just want your money?!?

I think I generally know when someone is blowing smoke up my... um... pipes. These are legitimate and yes, the pricing is correct. Check the website...
Also, here are the cheaper set...

lol...ouch those are some pretty pricey prices...
and no I wasn't suggesting that they were blowing smoke anywheres, I understand that there are prices out there, and there are quality components out there too, but that's just ridiculous...

That is WAYYYYY too much for speakers, I don't care how good they sound. You can get an awesome set of Peaveys for about 5,000 dollars and to me, they are some of the best-sounding speakers made.
