This is probably the hardest post I've ever had to write here at SimV, but I was informed earlier this evening by another one of our members here and I regret to inform you all that John "Tipster" Consterdine has passed away.

For more information please visit http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=cafe;action=display;num=10...

I know those of us who's lives John touched will be deeply upset by this tragic news, and our thoughts will be with his family.

This is incredibly sad news. He was one of the most well-trusted and well-respected members of this forum. I haven't been around for as long as a lot of people on here, but I think we'll all agree that he'll be very sadly missed by all of the Flight Sim community, and especially at SimV. His Baron panel was simply marvellous, and I just can't believe that he's no longer with us.

Hopefully he's flying that Baron around up high somewhere, looking down on us all and having a wonderful time.

I am dumbfounded.

The few times I chatted with him on MSN, I could tell right away that he was  giving, kind, and all-round great gentleman.

This is truly tragic.

This is a sad day and great loss for the FS community.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

My god . . . this is tragic.  I have no idea what I could write to make this better, but I guess I should just tell what I remember of Mr. Consterdine.

When I first showed up here nearly a year ago, Tipster, Ozzy and a few others were the assets that I used to gain all my knowledge of the FS world.  As things stand now, due entirely to the help of those like John, I am able to provide the same services they have provided for me in the past.

You'll be missed FS Tipster.  God Speed, Good Flying . . .

I can hardly believe this. I am literally stunned and so saddened by this news.

I never met John but this is part of a message I received from him on 3rd June, the day before he disappeared.

"Roger thanks for the encouraging words. I've no doubt that things will eventually take a turn for the better. It would be difficult for them to get any worse!

I hold on to a philosophy I've had since I was a child:

There is a ratio of bad things to good, that goes on in the world. It's pretty much fixed. So if I'm having a bad day (week/month/life), someone else is having a good one as a result.

It's probably all bull**** but it makes me feel better LOL"

John, I wish I could have done more to help in your time of need. I guess your philosophy says a lot about you. Even in your time of trouble your contributions did so much to help others and make their lives better.

I can think of no finer epitaph than the words you wrote to me.

Goodbye friend.

All of us feel privileged to have known John.

It's strange how someone you've never seen and never spoken to can become such a friend.  When the only thing you have in common is a few tips and jokes about a hobby.

John was a rare person for this time.  Always ready to give, never asking.

He will be sorely missed.

That's sad news indeed. What can I say? John was one of those ppl who took this program, stared into it's eyes and asked 'what can I really do with this?' It's these kind of efforts that expand the knowlege base of casual users such as myself. I do hope that when one passes on to the 'other' world the virtual Baron 58 is replaced with a shiny new real one, complete with the fresh leather scent in the cabin and less than 10 hours on the Hobbs Meter.

Clear Skies John!   Sad

Please tell me this is a joke....

I only knew John through this forum and he was such a great person to deal with. You know, I never thought of he passing away and i think no one here did. He will get internet again and come visits us. Unfortunately he couldn't and a part of him will always be in these forums.

He was a great man and even though we didn't have the privilige to meet him in person we talked with him about our hobby.

I do hope there is a baron up there Sad

This is trully sad indeed its hard to believe
At first I though of he is coming soon since Ozzy is posting about him to find to my dismay is the complete opposite.
Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad SadI can't believe this, i just can't

John's RTW website was a great source of inspiration, as I always enjoyed tuning in to see the work of a man who very much loved our hobby.

Noting from the papers that John was diabetic, I will be making a contribution to a charity that helps people with that disease.

Someone mentioned donating to the diabetes cause.  What if someone in charge (Pete, or a mod...) were to take up donations for anyone who wishes to do so (completely voluntary of course) and make a donation in the name of Simviation, and Mr. Consterdine's friends?

I did not know Mr Consterdine, but to hear of the loss of one so giving to his community is truly a sad thing. I know what it is like to lose a great person like Mr Consterdine in a forum and community as tight knit as this one. My family and I extend our most heartfelt wishes to the family and everyone that feels the loss of this great man.

Just a thought for whomever it may concern, I am assuming that his name here was "tipster". If it was not i am sorry. Anyways is there anyway that name can be retired or made unuseable by future members. I think it is a respectful thing to retire the name.

Truly a sad day for me.

Like most of you I only knew John through here. But, he helped me several times with some panel projects I was doing, and was kind enough to give me several pointers. He was a major insparation for many of the panels I've done.

Good-bye John. Your kindness, and enthusiasim will not be forgotten.

May John's memory live in our hearts for all times.

Yes it will be a long and sad recovery time, he was always in a  Smiley 8) mood with everyone. It is sad to see him go. Might I suggest this topic be moved to the Cafe since people there will know him. After all, not everyone in 2002 knew him. May he rest in peace.

Have just returned from vacation to find this bad news and had the chance to read thru the kind remarks and tributes.   I also received direct help and advice from the man I only knew as "tipster."      He sure knew his subject.

I thought the picture in a previous post of the jet breaking formation was very appropriate.

Condolences to those who knew him well and of course to any of his family who may be referred to these pages.

Well Ozzy, with all due respect, remove it from here then. Five people have sent me AIM IMs saying they wished that they didn't have to see it whenever they looked for something FS, and truthfully, I do not blame them. He was a good man, but there is a better place for this to be located. Sad

Well it was only recently I had renewed interest in fs2002 and my first quest was to visit his website to see how his RTW trip was going and was very sad to hear the news. He also helped me out on several occassions earlier this year on the forums and inspired many, including myself to a RTW trip. I like to think he finished the journey before he died.  Sad

I also wondered if John had completed the trip. This has been on my mind for a while and I would think with the pressure he was under that given the time I don't think he completed it.
I also don't think that he would have included Antarctica in his travels as FS does not have a listing there.

You are all invited to share a leg of John's RTW by going to the RTW site and seeing where you can fit in.

I have flown the Baron(must have Johns' panel)SCIE/SCSE/SCDA/SLPL/SEMT/MNMG/Z21W/MMCU for a total of 26hrs. I'm in Mexico at the moment volunteers for a North America leg are most welcome.

Please go to Johns' site and register your interest.

Cheers,
Col.

PICS!! YOUR KIDDIN' ME! I'm lucky to get this up. At the moment it's all Pacific and sky any way!

On a different note,a couple of more stops will see the Baron on its way home.

If you go to the RTW site you won't see the map showing progress or anything except an upgrade such as here.

Six join in and get the Baron home!!

Once again another 11.5 hours of sea and sky(should have been a surfer)interspersed with some place called Honululu and Christmas Island wherein is it the Baron currently rests.

Not having many options the plan is to:NTAA/NTGJ/Pitcairn Island(fly over only)/NTGJ/NCRG/NFTF/NZAA leaving there for Australia.

All these legs are more sea and sky, what I call transport legs,so if you're not interested flying any I fully understand. This is also basically my home ground(or water if you must!!)so lots of hours with nothing to see.

The weather has been so good but I think a cyclone or something else interesting wouldn't be missed I can tell ya! Grin

Cheers,
Col.

PLCH to NTAA was 7.2hrs and about 30gals. left. NTGJ later.

Weather has been good again with light winds but you've still got to pick your altitude(180 wind change in 500ft). So it was NTAA/NTGJ/Pitcairn Island(which needs a serious Sim overhaul!)/NTTX. Muroroa is not one of my favourite places but, hey, they got gas.

This was not the plan I put up but the winds etc changed all!  Total hrs 8.7

Cheers,
Col.

More sky and sea but with nice clouds this time Smiley
Stopped at NCRG for a refill(look in Scenery for a Raratonga upgrade)then off to NFTF. That is where the Baron is tonight.

Leg flying time----10.3 hrs. All being well New Zealand tomorrow!

Thanks RollerBall much appreciated and thanks to all who are viewing this. I'm posting on John's site as well.

NFTF/NZAA was actually more what I expected with adverse winds and even altitude hunting didn't produce any advantage over the trip. Once again sea, clouds and sky!

That stint was 6hrs and even a step to Norfolk Island is too long today to continue. So tomorrow it's off to Inverell(YIVL).

From Inverell the plan was to go up to YWIS across to ULURU(Ayres Rock)on to YPPH(my home) up the West coast of Australia to Bali, stop in to honour those of all nationalities that died in the bombings, then proceed up through Indonesia and across to India.

I see it that after the Baron is in Inverell that John is on the way home. The commitments have been met to this point although I having nothing to show(screen shots) apart from the log.

After Inverell all are most welcome to join in and take the Baron home. More tomorrow.

Cheers,
Col.

Here's a thought

I've not flown online before and from a few comments in screenshots and other forums, quite a few others haven't either.

When the Baron eventually gets home, would be good if it could be accompanied on all or part of the last leg, or be met even, by a bunch of SIMVs. That would be a fitting way to remember John that he would have been proud of I'm sure.

What do people think?

Right!

Any more takers?

For people like Cherokee and me we've got enough time to get things sorted out so we know how and can do it, plus sort out any technical bits and pieces.

I think a whole bunch of Barons coming into land one after the other led by John's would be something to remember and to remember him by. Fantastic!

We are a long way from home yet. And yes,I thought that some might want to do that. I have in the background a good friend of Johns' I am waiting to hear from who wishes to take the Baron home. As I said it's a long way yet.

SO:Sunrise over the Tasman Sea is great even in sim and the icing wasn't even a problem.
When I dialled up for the weather I got an error code a few times so I went with the last report and took off. The last dl gave huge headwinds so I put in a stop(Lord Howe Island YLHI)

Didn't need it as I rang my provider and found out that they were having problems with a worm and were setting up a router. Let that set for a while then tried again. Winds were good so I went on to YIVL

Time 7.2hrs

Cheers,
Col.

Dan,that is one person sorely missed.

The Baron is now at Northwest Cape, Learmonth(YPLM).
It's not much more than that due to health issues here but that's OK cos I was sick in YPPH-my home town so all I had to do was land and get a cab. home(10 mins.)sweet. Best part was I didn't have to think about what was the active runway all I had to do was look out the window to see the approach. Sit here with the window open and listen on final!!

Bali and beyond tomorrow.

Cheers, Col.

Lot of catching up to do here Grin I have been putting in an effort since the last post.

From Learmonth it was up to Bali then on to Jakarta. From there it was up the islands then across to Chennai in India. Next stop was Islamabad which was the stepping off place for an interesting flight to Gilgit(thanks MattNW). I must admit to have done the Gilgit flight before using FS intersections and flying up the river valley but it was so much more fun with FSnavigator being able to set my own fixes and get down low in the valley and only fly the final approach manually. Nice trip!!

Up and over from there following valleys in the general direction of Karachi then on to auto pilot and sit back ,til letdown. Which was fine until I was all lined up on final.
When the controller says'cleared to land No.3 for landing, follow the aircraft on final(me)'what it really means is 'cleared to land No.2 for landing, fly through the aircraft on final(me)'
Now if you haven't already found AUTOSAVE go looking for it because that was the first time I've had to use it and it is a very handy Utility.

Flying from Karachi to Djibouti via Salalah after that was pretty average. That is where the Baron is tonight HDAM.  Total flying timeYPLM/WRRR/WIII/WITT/VOMM/OPRN/OPGT/OPKC/OOSA/HDAM 37.2hrs.

On our way to ZIMBABWE!!

Cheers,
Col.

Well the flight down to Entebbe was fine apart from the fact that FSNavigator showed high ground on the right when in fact it was on the left and I had to fly around a lump of ground. Minor glitch,FSNav. is the guts!! From Entebbe I took off over to the top of Lake Tanganyika then headed along the left side of the lake for the length of it and finally landed in Harare. G'day GreG,had a beer for John while the Baron refuelled!!

I believe that the stop in Harare has met all of Johns' commitments around the world and so I've commenced the long haul up through Africa.

Current position for the Baron is FEFF. 5mins. after posting this it won't be there!!!

To date:HDAM/HUEN/FVHA/FZQM/FEFF. Total time 19.6hrs.

Cheers,I'm outta here,
Col.

Apology:FSNavigator uses the database  in FS2K2 for its' information.  Any suggestion that there is a fault in FSNavigator is incorrect.

OK. FEFF was the last stop so it's
FEFF/DRZD/DTTA/LFRC for a total of 15hrs.

The Baron is now in Cherbourg.

I am now waiting for contact from Johns' friends before proceeding further.

Cheers,
Col.

Johns' Baron is now back where it started its journey.
The flight was good and the landing done in rain and severe crosswinds. The Baron is now parked and shut down.

The last hour has been one of sadness as this journey ends.

Thanks to all who have followed the flight.

Now it's off to pub to salute John.

Yes. I completed Johns' RTW.

I only knew John through Simv but as you know for yourself from reading his posts that he was a very nice person and always ready to help.

Johns' RTW site is still open and I would ask anyone doing a RTW(or whatever)to consider posting there as well in the memory of John.

Remember that John never completed a RTW himself.

Cheers,

John went unemployed and consequently could not always afford things like the phone and internet bills.

Again, if I remember right, he wasn't sure if he was gonna be able to pay his for the internet & phone, and did eventually end up going offline when he wasn't able to afford it

There is discussion now of closing Johns site due to lack of attendance.

Johns memory is maintained here and I feel that Motov has done a marvellous job maintaining the site for this amount of time and should be congratulated.

I would suggest that everyone go to Johns site and express to Motov their appreciation and support for his decision to close the site and so ease his burden.

OK - it's been agreed that the time has come to cut the sticky on this & let it fall gracefully into the archives.

John was a great helper here on these forums - among other places. Dedicated to FS, he rarely was unable to find the answer to a problem - & entertained & helped many 100's of people - possibly 1000's.

John! Respect.......  8)
