I was just sitting here and thought I'd tell somebody about this. I've been hearing thunder for the past few minutes, loud enough to shake the walls, but when I looked outside, more blue than gray! What gives? Strangest weather I've ever seen! I can still see the sun, yet its by far some of the loudest I've ever heard. Strange stuff . . . ???

Could be kids playing with anti-tank mines? You know 10 points for a taxi, 20 for a police car, 100 for a bus load of nuns
J/K. Promise, except for the bit about the nuns... but that's personal

My old Dad would have appreciated the bit about the Nuns....
...!
He hated them, reckoned they destroyed little boys lives at school....
...!
...so...
are we all in favour of exploding Nuns...?
That would account for the sound of distant thunder...
...!
LOL...LOL...LOL...!
Cheers all...

Fozzer it gets my vote.
Learning Latin at the hands (and scalp shaving steel ruler) of Sister Psychosis of The Holy Order of The Bitchqueens, I have a v.strong feelings on this, although I have to say one of my good friends was studying to be a nun before deciding to head into nursing, and she has some outrageous stories of her novice days. Frightening! But hilarious.

Is there such a thing as heat lightning?
30-Oct-1981
Dear Cecil:
For a long time I have been debating this point with friends: I say there is no such thing as heat lightning. I say it is just lightning occurring far off in the sky, and all we see is the glow from the bolt. Who's right? --Ed E., Chicago
Cecil replies:
You are, as long as you're not getting your heat lightning mixed up with your sheet lightning. Heat lightning, the sudden reddish glow you sometimes see on warm summer nights, looks the way it does (and sounds the way it does, i.e., silent) because of its distance from you, the observer. At its source, it looks like regular old blue-white lightning; what makes it appear reddish from a distance is the atmosphere's propensity for scattering light on the blue end of the spectrum, the same phenomenon that produces red sunsets.
Much more common than heat lightning, however, is sheet lightning, which is produced by a discharge within a cloud rather than one from cloud to ground. Here the electrical channel is obscured by a cloud, and all you see is a huge sheet of illuminated cotton, or whatever it is they're making clouds out of these days.
An other cause of the noise could be any mining operation that might be near you

Okay, I live in Dallas TX, far away from any large body of water, and well away from any mining. It seems that I truly can't find an explanation for the disturbances!
And no, I am not nuts, just a few bolts . . .

Isn't Nature wonderful! I have seen isolated thunderclouds many times in otherwise blue skies but the one thing I remember is getting rained on at a school event when there wasn't a cloud in the sky!!
Now don't tell me it ain't so or that near on 500 people all decided to go delusional at the same time.
It truly was a "What the f...........!?!?!?" situation
