I just hear on the news that another destructive virus has reached the net. Once again it spreads through email and is said to be the work of pros. The virus masks the sender and hides in harmless looking attatchments. If you receive an email containing any kind of attatchments, DO NOT open it. Delete it imediately.
The virus is already suspected to infect 1 in 17 emails. Remember that prevention and a keen mind are the only way we can stop these dirt bags.

However, I suspect that as school returns, these viruses will eventually disapear. The talented programmers that create these will be preocupied with other things other than petty vandalism.

Here's the info provided by Symantec.

I've gotten a couple of obviously infected emails tonight.  Nothing like early in the week, though.

Some moron tried sending me one of these this morning. I'm thinking about changing a number of my email addresses to protect myself against the spamming vermin that got my addresses. When I find out who gave it to them there'll be hell to pay Angry

I'm no expert on viruses. I understand these things propagate themselves. Once they're out there nobody deliberately sends them or gives anyone your address. If you have ever mailed anyone who is subsequently infected by this type of virus they have your address. This is all they need to spread themselves. Not only can they send themselves to you but also to everone in that person's address book, making it appear that the e-mail came from you.

This is why it's most important for anyone who goes online to always have proper anti-virus software running, regularly updated with the latest virus definitions. Also, never open attachments unless you're absolutely certain they're genuine. I know how easy it is for anyone to be caught out but the people who don't follow these simple precautions are the ones responsible for spreading this stuff.

PS. My e-mail address is posted all over the WWW. On realising I am particularly vulnerable I haven't used the address book feature for many years. It's easy enough to keep a list of important addresses in a simple text file as mentioned by Brensec in another thread. Being on AOL I never use Outlook Express either.

Two of my addresses have been given to spammers is what I meant Hagar, sorry I didn't clarify myself too well there. My 3rd and most secret address (known to less than 10 people) has never been hit once....
Spammers and virus makers, believe me I've got ideas of what to do to them that not even the Spanish Inquisition dreamt up, mind you we do have electricity, which they didn't Grin

Spam is equally annoying but not in the same class as a virus which can seriously damage your system. I've been getting more spam than genuine mail for years & it's recently got worse. I once opened a Hotmail account to see how it worked. Only one trusted friend knew my address. When I went back only 2 hours later to check for mail the Inbox was full up. About 50 e-mails, all spam. Figure that out. Roll Eyes

PS. Think I spotted Rifleman as one of your inquisitors. I assume you're in there somewhere so who is the other one?

There does seem to be a large 'upheaval' among the genuine Internet users, that I think will eventually take care of Spammers (and possibly limit the propagation of Virus's).

I recently engaged a Web Host for a business page I am posting soon. The one I went with was chosen for many reasons. Cost, of course was an important factor.

The people I finally went with are 'ipowerweb' (they're in the US). The reason they got me was that they were one of a few that state they do not Host adult related sites and they do not host Spamming sites.
If all Web Hosts began to do this (or not do this, whichever way you look at it), the amount of Spam and crap on the Net would be greatly reduced. If you remove the crap, most of the crap people would go with it.
Imagine......... if tomorrow, all Web hosts banned their Spamming users. 'ipowerweb' make a profit without them, so it's possible. In fact they are in the top five in most reputable assessments.

I hope that this, coupled with the modest fee that they say will be charged in the not to distant future will cause all the 'urgers' to find someone else to annoy, in the real world, where there is a risk of getting a 'smack in the mouth' if you do half the things people do on the Net because of the anonymity.   Angry Angry    Grin Wink

I have had it with e-mails. I hate them, I defy them, and I will also be the next person in line to punish the living HECK out of them.

Hey Ozzy, you think the Spanish Inquisition is the worst? Wait till you see Vlad The Impailer (no, not the one from BattleBots). He was once a total ruler (not sure if was Russia he ruled over) that punished his people so badly, he would have them killed and hang their bodies on these long poles that impailed their bodies as a display. Many, today, say he was the first actual DRACULA. He not only drank the blood of his victims, he also ATE them as breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

If I ever find out who made the Code Red worm, the Blaster worm, Miranda virus, etc., I will... oh you know. Grin

I keep getting hit by spam so much, it feels like I'm playing a of Asteroid. I have to quickly delete them before they can come back.

Actually, it feels more like "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly". I have to be ready.....Set........DRAW!!! (Click..Click..Click..Click..Click..Click..Click..Click..Click..)  Grin

There is one other way to reduce e-mail spam as well. It's not practical, but it will do.

I think we are better off having our friends e-mail addresses in our heads rather than letting a computer know it all. Remember, spam spreads through the use of the address book. If we get rid of the book and put it in our heads, we will be able to slow down spam. But for how long?

I used to create "Blocked Message Rules" in Outlook Express, but after creating over 200 rules and still getting the same spam coming back from different addresses each time, I finally gave up, (which is just what the Spammers want).... Roll Eyes...!
I just "Block" and "Delete" them now..
..and still they come.. Cry...!

In a month or two's time, English Law makes it illegal to post un-solicited e-Mail on the Internet...
The trouble is....all the spam mail we get, originates from Florida,  (U.S. addresses, U.S. web-cams, and U.S. dollars), where the freedom of speech allows it... Angry...!

By the way, my Address book is empty, so cannot re-route viruses, you will be pleased to know... Wink...!

Cheers all... Grin...!

Spam has not only gotten into our e-mails, but also in our mail boxes, front doors, all the way down to our very own, highly-advanced, and very expensive CELL PHONES!!!!!!!

While I was in school, I always had my cell phone with me (Samsung, Verizon Wireless) when ever my parents want to contact me (due to school rules, I had to use vibrator mode).

My phone vibrated. So I thought it was my parents again wanting to remind me of something. However, when I flipped the visor over, the very first thing I saw was SSSSSPPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

My phone has the mobile web, but it's not activated because I have to call the service provider. So I don't know how it got there. ??? It asked me if I wanted a Big Mac for half the price. LMFAO

So I closed the visor and prayed to god that it doesn't happen again. Embarrassed

I have recently found out that in the very near future (since everyone here in the US has a cell phone that's mostly cheap as hell) every fast-food restaraunts will have an electronic system installed on there buildings.

That way, whenever you walk or drive pass McDonalds or Burger King, your cell phone would ring and then tell you about the so-called special offer on a Big Mac, or maybe tell you about a new pizza when you drive or walk by Pizza Hut or Papa Johns. AAAAAAaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

First spam comes as a food, then it comes to your mail box, then your e-mails, and now our cell phones?

Where the hell is this world leading to. Cry Cry

I hate ALL mobile 'phones, period... Angry..!
I am now getting pestered by young girls, (mostly), poking their little digits aimlessly over the device they cuddle in their hot little hand and ringing my LAND-LINE NUMBER and wanting to know when I am going to see them, do I still love them, have I missed them, am I taking them to the pictures tonight, have I found their cat yet, etc, etc... Angry...!
Whenever my land-line telephone rings now, I quote, " West Mercia Constabulary, who is calling please?".
I then go through a long serious of questions as to why they 'phoned this particular number requesting police assistance.
This always scares the s**t out of them in the hope that they will take more care in future when selecting their correct 'phone number... Wink...!

..aren't I nasty to them... Roll Eyes...?
...FLIPPIN' LOVE IT... Grin...!

I could poke mobile 'phones in places where the sun dont shine.... Wink...!

Katahu, Vlad (or Bela in the local lingo) was a Transylvanian (as it is now) prince. His castle is now a tourist attraction, and I'm a big fan of his work, particularly the gardening, e.g. lots of heads on poles along the garden path, this is v.me Grin

Thanks for correcting me on what country it was. I was thinking about Ivan The Terrible. This time, I know Ivan is Russian (at the time, it was called Prussia). He's not as evil as Vlad. But just like Vlad, he kills his own people (but in an old fashion way).

I saw a picture of Ivan in a history book back in school. He had a HUGE iron (or at least it looks like iron) cross on him like necklace.

My teacher told me that if you notice, those who wear big crosses on their neck are troublesome in a way. Those who where small ones, though, are not. ???

I was like, WHOAH!!!!!! I'm not sure if that's fully true. Is it?

OK, that was off topic. Back to the topic now.

Hey, does anyone here ever bothered to count how many viruses struck this year?

Hey Katahu,

I always thought Prussia was part of the Ottoman Empire, east of where Germany is/was until 1914-18. I think what used to be Prussia is now part of eastern Germany and Poland (and maybe a Baltic state or two).

(Hitlers 'Wolfs Lair' where the memorable assassination attempt took place was in what used to be known as 'East Prussia')

Although the names are similar to within 1 letter, Prussia was never part of Russia, (or vice versa), at all.  Grin Grin Wink
(Not when I went to school, anyway  Grin Grin)

Just another geography lesson................. Wink

Formatting your hard drive isn't a bad idea, provided you've done everything else first.  It's a last resort ONLY.

To remove this virus, which is named SoBig.F, go to www.symantec.com and follow the directions in their security response section.  There's a nifty removal tool which will scan your system for the virus.
