Anyone interested in joining the Simulated Air Racing Association, as either a pilot, or an organizers, should let us know here.

I'm in as a pilot, and in fact, my new official plane paint scheme will soon be revealed.  :::evil snicker:::

I don't know about you, EB, but I'm a bit worried.  I think this could be a lot of fun!  lol

I'm putting together "Team Hyperion" as we speak.  lol  I'm going to try to get as many of my pilots as possible to make up our team.

Also, I've already contacted several F$ sites about placing an ad on our racing planes in exchange for a link back to the racing page of the Hyperion website.  (Which has not yet been built.)

I'd think that the racing could be a great way to drive traffic not only to the sites of those who sponsor you, but also to your own website, if you've got one.

Just a thought!   8)

So this is an offline event, correct?

The participants rely on individual planning and execution to acheive the goal?

Race format and some basic rules and regulations should be layed out first. (?)

A couple of quick questions:

Does SARA need its own website?  And if so, do you know anyone who might make it?  (I don't know web design from dingus)

We need others for organization!  This is PRIORITY 1!  If we don't have a core team, we don't have anything.

If you wish to join up, on any level (pilot, management, anything), send replies to tshortdog@yahoo.com  (that's me, by the way)

Hyp, that's a good idea with the advertising.  I can also help with repaints and 'stickering'.  It looks like you're the advertising exec by default, unless some other enterprising person is willing.  Any takers?

I think there should be offline races and online races.  (The online races should be shorter tracks, IMHO...might make for some interesting competition.)

I agree that organization will have to be the heart of it.  If anyone wants to have a website, I can easily throw one together on like Geocities or something...

We'll also need some sort of logo.  lol

Ooh!  Ooh!  I call the logo!  Its mine!!!  Any requests, or can I just wing it?  (Hmmmm, "Just Wing It" . . . .)

Yes, a website on GeoCities would be great!  I'm there for input, and any kind of help you think I might be able to do.  My email's above.

PS  I'm taking off for the pub and a stroll, so I'll be gone a few hours.  I'll link up when I get back.  Peace . . .

I'm at work right now, so I can't really do a site NOW, and I've made a vow of virtual celibacy this evening, so no computer for me tonight.

As soon as someone gets a logo done (not naming names lol) I'll start on a site.

I do, however, love the term "Just Wing It..."

Will there be classes or open racing of unlimiteds.......one design to even out the field and make it a race of pilots rather than hardware........

These things need to be known in the design of a logo......if you want it to really be representative of the endeavor.........

.........just something to think of........I might take a run at this later on tonight .........

Excellent points, Ken.

The inclusion of multiple classes might also open the doors to a lot more pilots.

I know some guys would rather fly jets or twins over single engine props.  Some like more modern planes, others like the oldies...

It would definitely be a larger group with more types of planes allowed.

I don't have web space available, anymore. But, I can offer content.

Aircraft Catagories, Race Formats, Rules, Regulations, etc. Also, Online-Offline formats and some kind of prereqs for pilots to match their skill level.
(You wouldn't want to have a beginner pilot attempting advanced navigation techniques).

And that brings up another problem. Race formats would have to be taylored to the particular aircraft class.

It's OK to get from "A" to "B" as fast as possible, and that's OK, for an Online Open Class race.

But to challange the "intillectual" pilot, there's a "Hare and Hound Race", a "Treasure Hunt Race", a "Mystery Clue Rally", and literially tons of variations on many other formats that anyone flying anything, with little skill can participate in. Most of these can be offline, and there's almost no opprotunity to cheat. You'd have to make the correct choice and the correct move at the correct time, or you won't win. Plain and simple.

Sponsors could, (if they desire), offer up some kind of small prizes, posters, books, simple software, whatever.

You gents have the opprotunity to create something that's far and above just a Race Association. I can see a whole interactive site with lots of choices for ALL sim pilots to participate in, rather than just playing the game by yourself. Pick a race, follow the instructions, and maybe at least win bragging rights!

With a little creativity, cleverness, and careful laying of the foundation, this could be really fun for everybody, no matter what type of flying they like to do.

I'd like to make a suggestion that an Online conference be held using MS Netmeeting. (Standard on almost all computers). Coordinators, developers, promoters, whatever you'd call them could iron out details in real time, and get this show on the road. That would be more productive and quicker than an open forum.

What'cha think?

I can't believe this is going so far!  I love it!

Thanks all for your work and help so far, and I hope to be doing a lot more of this in the near future!

Happy to!

How about I work up an example of 3 of the offline races I mentioned earlier, to see what you think.

These would be geared toward Beginner, Moderate and Advanced skills. They would be used kind of like a FS 2000 Adventure, that can be downloaded from a site, as either a Text or Word file with EXPLICIT instructions that need to be followed, exactly. In the Advanced race, I'll include a FSNavigator flight plan. If the pilot doesn't have FSNav, a simple text flight plan can be included, but that will make it much harder. That could mean that the point values would increase. At your discretion.

The only way to finish and win is to execute all the instructions to the letter.  A series of questions about the individual race would be posted and the answers and solutions would be held by the webmaster only. You could even go so far as to require a password that the webmaster would e-mail to the pilot when he's listed as "Finished",  to gain access to the questions. Again, at your discretion.

We were doing this kind of stuff back in the early 80's as part of Road Rallies in the Bay Area, California. (With paper and pencil, of course.)
You had to get the accuracy part down, first, to get the fast times.
It was hard, but one hell of a blast!

Anyone who flies for a VA may want to propose the idea to their CEO, too.  I know we're doing "Team Hyperion", perhaps some of the others will want to put a team together representing their airline as well.

Great!

I finished a "Treasure Hunt" for beginners, last night. All of the content is FS2002 default stuff. Aircraft, scenery, and Kneeboard information. (Opps! Maybe I shouldn't have said that part!) It's about an hour and a half of flying, touch and goes, simple navigation, and questions to answer along the way. I only have to format the instructions and questions so they can be downloaded. It was a little more work than I thought, but it was time well spent.  Grin

I've got some appointments I have to be at today, so I'll e-mail you the file(s) later when their completed.

Yes, for sure.  And now that I think about it, we need someone to run "quality control".  A person to take a look at the files of the aircraft that will be flying and make sure they match as closely as possible the real thing.  Any takers?

Well, I haven't been at home for the past few days, so I am going to have to wait till I return from vacation.  Probably won't have any real logo or site up for at least a couple of weeks, yet.

Don't worry, we'll keep you updated, just keep coming back here.

And we still need someone to do quality control.  It really wouldn't be that hard.  Just checking specs online and then comparing them to the specs in the aircraft.cfg files of the aircraft that a person wishes to race with.  I would do it, but I think its time to start passing around a few of the jobs.  Still looking for those that wish to be a part of SARA.  Anyone who is interested email me at tshortdog@yahoo.com

Well, if it will help take some of the load off, once we are closer to a start date, I can do a lot of the "get the name out there" kinda stuff....

I assume you mean going around the net and posting things with stuff like 'check this out' or 'great new site' or something like that?  Great, but remember that there probably won't be a site for a good few weeks, as I have been out of town, as have a couple of my friendly neighborhood web-men.

Hey Hyperion,

Great idea you have came up with. I have been searching around for something exciting. VAs can be a bit boring at times. I have designed websites for a few and just found that regular VAs are sluggish.

This idea sounds like it may have legs, and could be alot of fun. So much fun that I may install my FS again.

This is what I can do for the effort:

WEBSPACE:
I have a server at my office that has absolutely nothing on it. Just sittin there collecting dust and viruses probably LOL. I can get that back up and running and we could have unlimited webspace on a Win2000 box with SQLServer 2000. I have a pretty good business DSL connection also.

FSUIPC PROGRAMMING:
I have dabbled a bit with programming with fsuipc. Though I bet there are others out there with more talent and experience than I for sure.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT:
I would be able to provide full database support and design with ASP driven frontend for the site.

The only pet peeve I have about projects like these is personnel not wanting to be involved after the first week of operations. Good people make a great project work.

Here is what I think you would need to make this work and work great.

ADVENTURE WRITERS:
For those offline who race, run the adventure and race. The adventure would give you a code at the end to submit to the site and that would record and verify your time and all that stuff.

SCENERY DESIGNERS:
For creating the scenery for the races, example being the Reno air races have the oval course with poles and pilons for the course.

AIRCRAFT DESIGNERS AND PAINTERS:
Well, self explanitory.

If im off target let me know.

If you want my help im here. Just say the word and we can start to recruit the personnel needed for a great project.

Actually, I wish I could take credit for this idea.  It's more of a team effort than anything.  One person said something, then someone else, then I tossed my two cents in, and this thing was born.

Your offer is very, very generous.  I think Ender Baron is the head honcho right now, so we'll have to see what he says.

As for the staff needed, I'm thinking that each team should be responsible for their own repaints.  At Team Hyperion, we're doing our own.  We're also seeking our own sponsors.

As for writers and designers, those would be great to have within the organization itself.  I know NOTHING about that stuff, or I'd offer to do that part of it.  At most, I can help with publicity...

And finally, Hyperion Airways is NOT boring.  LOL

Eldor_Baron....

Get with me, lets get this thing going full steam.

I happen to live in the Reno area, and I am going to the races in a couple weeks.

Email Me....

indagroove@charter.net

Yeah each team creating thier respective planes is a great idea, but some wont have the know how to create and paint.

As classes go... here is what I have found.

Bi-Planes
Formula One
Sport
T-6
Jet
Unlimited

Each class has its own horsepower and course requirements.

Out of curiosity also, what did you use to put the page together?  If you're using your ISP, chances are you're not using any sort of page builder option that they provided (they usually don't have one)...did you do it with manual code or with FP or DreamWeaver?
