just wondering if anyone is willing to say what is their greatest fear and to see if anyone can answer a question thats been bugging me for months.
Mine include arachnophobia and drowning.
the question is:
Why is it more frightening to ask a girl out than to jump from 5000' ?
If someone with multiple personality disorder threatens suicide, is it a hostage situation?

I don't like crowds!! I could spend the rest of my
life alone on an island and it would not be a
problem!! Kimber is the same way, we need,
twin islands!!

The dark. Actually being alone in the dark. If I can't see it it bothers me. Especially vast expanses of darkness. Also large bodies of water. Mostly besause after 20 feet or whatever it gets dark.

I don't like thunderstorms and large crowds. I used to hate hights until I went up Skylon Tower in Niagera Falls. These weren't sever as a phobia as they don't disrupt my life and make me cower in my basement.

Kittens that wave scare the CRAP out of me Steve-O!
I'm not fond of large crowds either, but it's more of a discomfort than a fear. I think my worst fear is speaking in front of a group of people (large or small, it doesn't matter).

Sounds like you may have a bit of a 'complex' as far as girls go, Craig. but I'm sure you probably know that, mate.
To be perfectly honest, I was never all that confident either, but for some reason, the few girlfriends I had before I was married and the ones that I've been involved with since (3 marriages), have approached me.
Of course, as soon as I was married the first time at 19, they started coming out of the woodwork.

The Huntsman is the one your'e probably referring to crawling up the wall. They have a nasty bite but are pretty harmless.
(The smaller ones are more often than not, the ones that pack the punch).
Aust. has the most poisonous in the Sydney Funnelweb (female). Not far behind but a bit smaller is the Redback (same family as your Black Widow).

This is a typical problem of Vietnam vets...I hate crowds...anyone that's ever been to Saigon would be this way. I agree on the island living also. I'm more at home in the woods and I hate big cities with a passion.
You would think after those darned tunnels that I'd be claustrophobic...but I'm not. Only one trip into one, made me decided that I'd prefer a courtmartial over a return visit though.

I noticed that big thing next to the moon a few days ago, thought it was Venus though
.
The reason all of this started was that a friggin huge spider set landspeed records around the living room last night. The body was about an inch long and had 2 inch legs (biggest I've ever seen in Scotland).
And brensec its not that I'm afraid of girls, only the rejection part

My love of spiders means that my house is full of them, cobwebs everywhere, which I have to wade through every morning....

I pick them out of my bath, and carry them carefully outside... 8)...!

I'm not too bothered by spiders its only when your just about in bed and you see a spider. You try to grab it and chuck it out the window but they are fast little, (or in some cases very big,) things and it goes where you can't see it and I'm edgy for the rest of the night.
Oh yeah and something for you guys to have nightmares about.

I see I'm not alone with my dislike of crowds & confined spaces. I could cope with most things except being trapped in a crowded lift (elevator) or serving on a submarine. Spiders never bothered me until I got married. My ex was/is terrified of them & passed her fear on to me (& our daughter). I'm much like Fozzer now & encourage them as pets. Here Boris.* LOL

Life plays tricks on us, and I feel God has a strange
sense of humor!!
My brother had a terrible fear of dying in a nursing
home!! Laying there for years, rotting away!!
He did not fear death, he feared suffering!!
On Feb. 17 of this year, while doing volunteer
work at a nursing home, he had massive heart
attack and was gone in a matter of seconds!!

Remember them? Don't remind me. Daddy Longlegs we used to call them. (Is there a Mummy Longlegs? ) We get plagues of the pesky things. Not sure when the next batch is due. I spend all my time trying to stop them committing suicide by fluttering around inside my lampshades. They insist on crawling all over my monitor too. I feel rather sorry for them as someone told me they only live for a few days.

I may be wrong with the specifics, but the Crane Fly belongs to the Dipthera class and the Daddy Long Legs are, well, they're not even insects! Arachnids unless I'm mistaken. Although it is possible the Long Legs is a nymph of the Crane Fly, but counting up the legs should tell otherwise. Besides, I'm pretty sure all species belonging to Dipthera undergo Complete Metamorphisis. Although it's been awhile since I've studied insects, so don't take my word for it.

You certainly know your bugs Scorp. It might depend on which part of the world you're from. We always called crane flies Daddy Longlegs around here.

Thanks Hagar, although I did misspell Diptera...

Yup. We're almost close neighbours. Off topic. Pity we couldn't have met up at Shoreham Airport this weekend.

Here in Canada we call the spider "daddy long-legs" and I've always heard the crane fly refered to as "mosquito hawks"... I'm not sure why the word "hawk" is used but they do look like giant mosquitos. I've been told not to kill the crane flies because they eat mosquitos... maybe that's where the "hawk" comes from.
Did you know that if you pull a leg off of one of those long legged spiders it will continue to move on it's own for a while? Creepy.
The coolest insect is the dragonfly... they look like little helicopters. I once saw one eat a large deer-fly alive.

In Australia, the spider is a 'Daddy Long Legs' and the thing with wings that you're calling a 'Crane Fly' is known here as 'A Bloody Big Mozzie'.
P.S. (from the 'Brensec Encyclopaedia of Useless Information') The daddy long legs spider has the most poisonous venom of all the spiders, but it delivers such a miniscule amount that it won't even harm a human. I have heard that their bite can be quite painful though.
Although I don't know anyone whose ever been bitten by one as they are so unaggressive.
They also keep the mozzie population down too.

I was starting to think that as well, so how can a six legged freak that flies be an 8 legged freak that scutters?

Having just read the origional message about what is worse for Craig. It has to be asking the girl out. My reasoning is simple. You are able to imagine a world in which she says no, or even laughs in your face. You are probably not able to imagine a world in which your 'chute fails to open. The first is a common experience for most men before they find miss right. The second happens very rarely and usually makes the news.

PS Sarah borders on phobic with spiders and I hate Wasps. Sarah tells me that your fears and phobias increase with age. What I will say is that few people are generally phobic about anything. Many will say they are but the same people will tell you that they get the flu 3 times every winter. What they get is a cold, the flu is a killer. Many people find spiders, small spaces and mice unpleasant. An actual phobia is an awful condition that causes extreme physiological responces and sometimes psychological damage.
I described myself as an arachnophobe until I moved in with Sarah. After the first three I got over it. I was as phobic as a chocolate teapot is useful.

Nah, I still hold my statement. Whenever I find myself in the aforementioned situation, my thinking (and sometimes breathing) becomes erratic, I feel like I get a these little pin pricks all over my body and of course the profuse sweating. Fortunately the monitor always keeps the room nice and bright though.
Although I am scared of cliffs/edges (like getting within several yards of the second story railing of the mall), that would be more like you said, an extreme discomfort.

That actually sums up my fear of hights, well edges as I mentioned before. I don't like getting too close to edges. I hate going near edges at the mall or going up on the roof to clear the eves. I know how it started too. When I was little, my dad used to turn me upsidedown and hang me over the banister. Some may call it child abuse but I think he has the mind of a 10 year old and does that to everyone.

No relation to Michael Jackson, is he?
(I'm sorry, but seriously, that sounds quite cruel and silly, to say the least. Although I know some father's idea of making 'men' of their sons, is scaring the living crap out of them.............
)
As for 'Phobias', I agree with the poster who describes them as the serious psychological conditions that they are.
I am claustrophobic, and I think many people can relate to the 'feeling' that it can cause. But I have difficulty getting into elevators (lifts). If the door doesn't open as soon as it stops, I will begin to panic. The 2 seconds or so that it can take for it to open sometimes, can, to me, feel like 2 minutes. I don't seem to be able to breathe well, while inside etc etc.
I know there are people with a more extreme condition than mine. As with everything medical/psychologhical, there are varying degrees.
I know one person who would literally die, before voluntarily getting into a lift. He just cannot do it. I just have difficulty.
I had to have an MRI scan a couple of weeks ago. It's similar to a CT scan but the tunnel you go into is narrower thab a CT and longer than your body. They have a special day of the week when people who have claustrophobia can be sedated before the procedure, otherwise they would never get us into it.
Craig, just a suggestion. If you cannot overcome your fear of approaching a girl, why not try a letter or note (provided you can get it to them without being too conspicuous). That way you can be sure the words will come out perfectly. Also, if you're a reasonable 'poet', most girls will be flattered, if not thrilled by the novelty.

Speaking of heights I have a photo taken of me standing right on the edge of the Grand Canyon somewhere. One step back & nothing but a mile drop. No safety rails or anything. With our trusty Native American guide at my side I felt perfectly safe. I'll look it out & post it sometime if you promise not to laugh at my bandy legs. John Wayne had nothing on me.

I'm afraid of thunder and lightning, especially at night when its dark. At my friends cottage, if a bolt of lightning strikes close enough, the lights flash and the walls shake. The place is also out of the city, so when the lights go out, its pitch black.
I guess I could be afraid of the unknown, I think it gets me at paintball fields.

I don't really have any regular, everyday fears. I think mine live somewhere around disasterville. You know, nuclear holocaust, comet striking the earth, sun blowing up, things like that. I think I have so far imagined every possible way for the planet to be completely and utterly destroyed, but just can't seem to get scared by an elevator. If it happens, it happens, that's about my outlook on it.
Now my mother, that's a different story. Mice. Used to be you just said the word and she would cringe. I seriously think it was a phobia for her. My mother is a very independent woman, but when she would see those beady little eyes poking out from somewhere, it was up on the nearest tall object shrieking time. Fortunately, I weened her of that. I found a little nest of mice one day while digging in the back garden and the mother ran off, leaving little pink babies everywhere. Only one looked like it was going to live, so on a whim I took it inside to my mom. To my surprise, she stuck it in a little earring box stuffed with cotton and carried it around with her. ("We're going to town." "Who, you got a mouse in your pocket?" "As a matter of fact . . .")
She even let it sleep in her bed, down near the foot so it would stay warm, then one day about a week later she rolled over on it in her sleep. Long trip with a short end. Was an interesting week though. She'd pull the damn thing out while we were in the store or something and start feeding it with a little eyedropper, and everyone around would stare. Great, as if I didn't already feel like a freak!
