i have only one (big) fear...spiders! this month i've already found two large ones in my room...and when i say big ones...i mean really big one!!!

Having just read the origional message about what is worse for Craig. It has to be asking the girl out. My reasoning is simple. You are able to imagine a world in which she says no, or even laughs in your face. You are probably not able to imagine a world in which your 'chute fails to open. The first is a common experience for most men before they find miss right. The second happens very rarely and usually makes the news.

PS Sarah borders on phobic with spiders and I hate Wasps. Sarah tells me that your fears and phobias increase with age. What I will say is that few people are generally phobic about anything. Many will say they are but the same people will tell you that they get the flu 3 times every winter. What they get is a cold, the flu is a killer. Many people find spiders, small spaces and mice unpleasant. An actual phobia is an awful condition that causes extreme physiological responces and sometimes psychological damage.

I described myself as an arachnophobe until I moved in with Sarah. After the first three I got over it. I was as phobic as a chocolate teapot is useful.

Nah, I still hold my statement. Whenever I find myself in the aforementioned situation, my thinking (and sometimes breathing) becomes erratic, I feel like I get a these little pin pricks all over my body and of course the profuse sweating. Fortunately the monitor always keeps the room nice and bright though. Grin

Although I am scared of cliffs/edges (like getting within several yards of the second story railing of the mall), that would be more like you said, an extreme discomfort.

That actually sums up my fear of hights, well edges as I mentioned before. I don't like getting too close to edges. I hate going near edges at the mall or going up on the roof to clear the eves. I know how it started too. When I was little, my dad used to turn me upsidedown and hang me over the banister. Some may call it child abuse but I think he has the mind of a 10 year old and does that to everyone.

I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday. Wink

(I'm sorry, but seriously, that sounds quite cruel and silly, to say the least. Although I know some father's idea of making 'men' of their sons, is scaring the living crap out of them............. Sad

As for 'Phobias', I agree with the poster who describes them as the serious psychological conditions that they are.
I am claustrophobic, and I think many people can relate to the 'feeling' that it can cause. But I have difficulty getting into elevators (lifts). If the door doesn't open as soon as it stops, I will begin to panic. The 2 seconds or so that it can take for it to open sometimes, can, to me, feel like 2 minutes. I don't seem to be able to breathe well, while inside etc etc.
I know there are people with a more extreme condition than mine. As with everything medical/psychologhical, there are varying degrees.
I know one person who would literally die, before voluntarily getting into a lift. He just cannot do it. I just have difficulty.

I had to have an MRI scan a couple of weeks ago. It's similar to a CT scan but the tunnel you go into is narrower thab a CT and longer than your body. They have a special day of the week when people who have claustrophobia can be sedated before the procedure, otherwise they would never get us into it. Grin

Craig, just a suggestion. If you cannot overcome your fear of approaching a girl, why not try a letter or note (provided you can get it to them without being too conspicuous). That way you can be sure the words will come out perfectly. Also, if you're a reasonable 'poet', most girls will be flattered, if not thrilled by the novelty. Grin

Speaking of heights I have a photo taken of me standing right on the edge of the Grand Canyon somewhere. One step back & nothing but a mile drop. No safety rails or anything. With our trusty Native American guide at my side I felt perfectly safe. I'll look it out & post it sometime if you promise not to laugh at my bandy legs. John Wayne had nothing on me. Grin

I'm afraid of thunder and lightning, especially at night when its dark. At my friends cottage, if a bolt of lightning strikes close enough, the lights flash and the walls shake. The place is also out of the city, so when the lights go out, its pitch black.

I guess I could be afraid of the unknown, I think it gets me at paintball fields.

I don't really have any regular, everyday fears. I think mine live somewhere around disasterville. You know, nuclear holocaust, comet striking the earth, sun blowing up, things like that. I think I have so far imagined every possible way for the planet to be completely and utterly destroyed, but just can't seem to get scared by an elevator. If it happens, it happens, that's about my outlook on it.

Now my mother, that's a different story. Mice. Used to be you just said the word and she would cringe. I seriously think it was a phobia for her. My mother is a very independent woman, but when she would see those beady little eyes poking out from somewhere, it was up on the nearest tall object shrieking time. Fortunately, I weened her of that. I found a little nest of mice one day while digging in the back garden and the mother ran off, leaving little pink babies everywhere. Only one looked like it was going to live, so on a whim I took it inside to my mom. To my surprise, she stuck it in a little earring box stuffed with cotton and carried it around with her. ("We're going to town." "Who, you got a mouse in your pocket?" "As a matter of fact . . .")

She even let it sleep in her bed, down near the foot so it would stay warm, then one day about a week later she rolled over on it in her sleep. Long trip with a short end. Was an interesting week though. She'd pull the damn thing out while we were in the store or something and start feeding it with a little eyedropper, and everyone around would stare. Great, as if I didn't already feel like a freak! Roll Eyes
