In the "Stupid idiots guide to Gmax", in the "Getting the Three Views into gMax" section, they recommend using an engineering diagram in bitmap form. Where does one get these and are they totally necessary?

To answer your last question first,
engineering drawings or any other kind of reference graphic are not totally necessary to make a model in Gmax. They're just one more tool to make things look right.
One of the better sources of reference drawings that I've found are a couple of British plastic model magazines. Scale Aviation Modeller,
www.sampublications.com
and Scale Aircraft Modelling. The advantage these drawing have over regular 3-views is that they have several sections and views without wings or engines getting in the way of fuselage detail.

Every once in a while, yes.
They recently did the Wessex.
There are other scale plans available on the web. Check the Simviation Design Resources page for some of my favorite links.

Great news! My buddy works at an aircraft repair shop and photocopied some good diagrams of the beaver and otter from some De Havilland repair manuels. All I have to do is scan them and i got my bitmaps.
