I thought I'd let you guys know about this virus that has been spreading like wild fire. It's a worm virus that effects Windows 2000 and XP. I would suggest going off line until it goes away. Be sure to update your virus defenitions first. Symantec has already released their anti-virus definition for this worm.

What the worm does is it attacks the windows boot system causing your computer to freeze at the Windows loading screen which appears when you first start up. It only effects Windows 2000 and XP. Previous versions of Windows, MacOS, Linux, and Unix are not effected. It seems that this was released as a personal vendetta against Bill Gates for computer problems, according to CNN. It has already effected over 50,000 systems world wide.

Thanks for the heads-up Orenda. I'll keep my eyes peeled. However most machines being steam powered here I hope to be okay, but I do keep my firewall on and anti-virus stuff fully up to date.

The virus is an annoyance at best.  It won't damage anything (yet) but it will give you a 60-second countdown and shut down your system.

It's easily removed.

Anyone wishing to see how to remove the virus, can do so here:

http://www.wgy.com/script/headline_newsmanager.php?id=195569&pagecontent=nationa...

We found it on the second computer, which is actually the newer of the two (two weeks old lol).  But it's harmless, really, and it's easily fixed.

For some reason I don't have it........hmm???????????

I just updated my McAfee firewall with their latest DAT file..........um. Lets see. Updated from withtin the virus-scan and went to the site and downloaded the update as well. Also installed that. Checked a firewall update. And I have my firewall on alert now Smiley I also downloaded the Windows Update and installed it. I think I am pretty safe. The virus-scan update forced me to restart and nothing happened so I think I am safe for now.

tip #1: always leave your firewall on
tip #2: update virusscanner
tip #3: update windows

These three will get rid of most problems at any given time

How is this virus supposed to infect our systems???

I rarely get e-mails, and i'm not dumb enough to run every attachment.

theres a hole in windows that it gets through, it doesnt need an email or attachment, it searches out ip and attacks them, if i remember rightly. just get the update for windows and you should be safe

A word of advice people, dont install a fresh copy of windows XP without reformatting your HDD. You wont get the administration rights for any user. Undecided

True...the virus doesn't need an email to infect your system, which is why it has spread so rapidly.  It finds a hole in the protection of Windows (not ME though...) and gets ya that way.

Easy to remove though.

Its kind of a triumph for Windows user friendliness.. You can stop the virus by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL and ending the process Grin

LOL...I saw this post the other day and started searching for it, but never did find it on my computer with virus scan, or by searching for the executable file.

However a fellow coworker was having problems with his computer, and so with this post fresh in mind I began to speculate on what really happened to his computer  Smiley Sure enough he had it, and with the info posted on this wonderful site was able to fix it in a matter of minutes!

Thanks for taking the time to post the info Orenda!
