Hagar,

Thanks for straightening me out on the location of the FS2002 folder, I will give it a chance ASAP. At least now, for some reason, after the original load up & I get the error messages, amounting to 17 error messages, I can change aircraft, etc, with no error messages, at least thats some kind of improvement.

Thanks,

Hammer

Hagar,

Went to the Root directory "C" drive, programfiles\microsoftgames\fs2002. Renamed it "old FS2002", inserted #1 disc, clicked "start here", it took me right to the FS2002 Welcome scene. Obviously I'm doing something wrong, if I ever find out what it is, I'll really be in business. At the present time, I only have about 6 different 3rd party aircraft I want to add, but I think every one of them has different installation instructions, all I can do is hang in there, I'll find my way yet. I'm glad the default aircraft are there working after a fashion.

As an ofshoot to the missing scenery files, if you don't mind my asking another newbie question, in trying to open several "air" & "mdl" files, with Winzip, I get the message, "Winzip can't open the file, it doesn't appear to be a valid archive" I thought that both files were important ??? How are they handled ???

Hammer. I think you're a tad confused here. Renaming the FS2002 root directory folder hides it from the setup install program on the CD. I suspect you didn't rename it correctly or renamed the wrong folder. Here's one way of doing it.

First find the FS2002 folder.
...

Rick-click on the FS2002 folder & select the Rename option. ...

The text will be highlighted in blue ready for editing.
Type the new name in the box. Any name will do providing it's different.
I used FS2002 Old.
...

Click on a free space in the window to finish the process. If you don't, the name might not change. Make sure it has the new folder name.

Now exit Windows Explorer & all other open programs. Insert FS2002 CD-1 & select Install. Let it install to the default path. When it's complete you will have 2 separate installs of FS2002.
...

WinZip is used for compressing/extracting zipfiles & other compressed files. It's not used for editing files. The MDL would not usually be edited. The AIR file can be opened in an FD editor like AirEd from the Design Utilities section. Other files like Aircraft.cfg & Panel.cfg can be opened in Notepad or other text editor. I don't think you will need to do this for a while. Let's get your FS2002 straightened out first.  Wink

I think you might find my Windows Basics article useful. http://www.simviation.com/lair/Windows%20Basics.htm

Brad, Thanks, but don't have an "E" drive.

Hagar,
Thanks, you got me on the straight track, I've got the two seperate installs of FS2002. Where do I go from here to get an install of FS2002 without the malfunctioning scenery & with the addons ???

Right. So far, so good. The desktop shortcut will now run the new install of FS2002. Run it & wait for the databases to be created. Check it out from Create a Flight with a default aircraft. Then set up the display settings etc. When it's running to your satisfaction transfer your addons to it. Do this carefully as one might have caused the problem. It might be best to add them one at a time & check them out in the sim each time. Don't forget to tranfer the gauges. I very much doubt that an aircraft would cause your problem with the scenery.

When all is up & running properly you can safely delete the old FS2002 directory folder. (FS2002 Old)

Hagar,

Right, so far, so good. Ran about 4 flights with default A/C, no problems. You lost me on display settings. Tried moving addons, dragging & dropping did not work, the cut & copy command did not seem to be available. The windows "Move" command was not successful. a copy command put a folder in the new FS2002 folder, but the A/C does not show up in the select aircraft in FS2002, so here I am back again, needing help.

Tweaking the display settings is one of the first things I do after installing a new sim. You can access the menu from Settings/Display on the FS2002 startup screen. If you're happy with what you have, leave well alone for now.

I can't imagine why you're having problems transferring those addons. I suspect you're not too familiar with installing aircraft & originally extracted the files direct to the sim. This is not a good idea. Please read this tute before going any further. http://www.simviation.com/acinstall.htm

Make sure you're pasting the files/folders to the correct location, the FS2002 folder on your HD, not the CD. Any of the standard Windows functions should do it. (I prefer Copy/Paste or Cut/Paste to Drag & Drop.) It might be better to forget the idea of transferring them & make a fresh start. Download/install them properly to your new F2002.

Hagar,

The settings/display didn't give me any problems.
I agree, I'm not to familiar at all with transferring aircraft. I had read & printed out the tutorial before along with a couple of others I ran across. Am aware of & avoid downloading the files directly to the sims, I use a temp folder before installing. Some of the addon aircraft I tried worked with no problems, others are nothing but problems, so far I've only been able to transfer one. Several times I receive a message "Source & destination folder are the same" ???Before I'm done, I'll know what I'm doing. You've been very patient, thanks much.

Hammer. This message means you're trying to paste the files back into their original location, wherever that might be. The idea is to paste them from your download folder into FS2002\Aircraft. The Aircraft folder is inside your new FS2002 installation which we went through before.
Your problems are almost certainly caused by your inexperience with Windows Explorer. This can be a tad daunting if you've never done it before but it's actually quite straightforward once you understand the basics. I suggest you take a few moments to set the Folder Options as shown in my Working with Windows article. http://www.simviation.com/lair/windows.htm
This should make it much easier to understand. I'm sure you will soon figure it out.  Wink
