Am I the only one here that feels like lately, perhaps the boards are getting too serious? Even as recently as a week ago, this used to be a fun place where people could just come and be silly if they wanted to. Now, when this occurs, people get on their case about how they shouldn't be doing this, or shouldn't be doing that, or shouldn't have this opinion, or can't post here.
What is happening to SimV, and how can it be stopped before we all go look for somewhere that reminds us of what SimV used to be?

i dont know but i myself have been thinking about taking some time away to let things settle down, what you need to remember is until recently simv was split into two groups, those who would spend only a few posts here asking for help, and then there was a smaller group of people who had been here and were a tight knit community i suppose, and a few people might be a little touchy that has changed(not in a bad way) add that to the heatwave for us europeans and the fact that the summer hols for our american friends are almost if not already over, its leady to a few frayed tempers, now and then, give it a few weeks and people will start to settle down again

Contrary to popular belief I do have a sense of humour, albeit a tad weird.
I think most flame wars (like the ones in the FS2004 forum) start by someone misinterpreting an innocent comment & reacting without thinking. Things often look different in print, especially in an international forum like this. Then someone else chimes in & the name-calling starts. This is unforgiveable IMHO & is usally quickly stamped out.
In my experience, feelings usually calm down after a while, especially here. In most cases it's better to bite your tongue & not respond. That can often make things worse. Most of the regulars are level-headed enough to sort it out themselves. Everyone has their off days. I've upset people in the past by not reading a topic carefully & saying something stupid. Once it's posted it's too late as someone is bound to see it.

I don't mind the SimV community growing, but it seems that it's getting too busy. Post a thread in the FS2004 forum, and within a few hours it's bumped to the next page
I kinda miss it when it wasn't so big, where all the regulars were good friends

As it is called
The post eater or the Forum Monster
'
I have also seen a few arguments but I prefer to stay out of them, we have many open-minded people here and the arguments are bound to be fixed at sometime.
They might be getting too serious but i think it will pass. Yes this is getting mighty big but we can handle it right guys? In a sense, we are still a little family. As I said before, there are some that post and leave, some that post and stay and become relly active........when someone passes that 150 mark in my opinion he is already a member of this family. As many don't pass 50, and well, we don't get to know them.
I think we are still the same family. I've been here for a year and I've seen members come and go, but we've stayed the same ( not counting those that have sadly have to leave us)

Thats one thing that I wouldn't be to concerned about. Give FS2004 a few weeks and let the "newness" wear off a little and the that forum probably won't be as busy.
As far as the too seriousness goes, I think that is just something in the air-I'd give it a few weeks as well

Blame all of the problems that recently resulted in a flamewar in the FS2K4 forum on the payware guys, it's all their fault.
Danged payware guys.

Another thing that caused this was that "Ozzy War" which some people thought was childish and stupid. A pitty too, some of us were having a good 'ole time. Oh well.

I'm just confused as to why people can't read the posts they want to, and ignore the ones they don't.
What the name of the person who posted it is irrelevant...

Well. look at it this way. It would be different if the name change only affected the General & Cafe boards. I specialise in troubleshooting, mainly on the CFS1, CFS2, FS2002 & Design boards. It's taken me a long time to establish some kind of reputation here. Some people trust what I say & even ask for me by name. Others think I speak a load of rubbish. That's up to them. LOL
My point is this. If I change my name now I will have to start again from scratch, just as I did when my old persona Grumpy1 "retired". Even if I did this briefly, all my existing replies in every board on this forum will be posted under the new name which would completely confuse the people I was talking to. I would have to think very carefully before doing this. It's a great idea for a joke but you have to see the other side of the argument.

Hagar, I agree with you. There are some people that, for whatever reason, would not want to include themselves in the name change gag.
Which brings me back to my point, if you don't want to do it, don't.
That's the other side that the "anti's" don't seem to get...

Oh no. I feared this would happen.
On the last occasion we had several name changes in one week from a particular person. No names, no pack drill.

half of it is probably because of name changes. it is making people confused and frustrated. No wonder people are in a bad mood.

However I think its for the best that people stick to their known logins, it does help to prevent confusion. I was delighted with the whole Ozzy thing, but looking through some of the posts during my abscence it seems all it did was cause mass confusion. I never realised I was such a cult figure

Well, I've been a bit crook (*see below) for a week or so, so I seem to have missed these 'incidents that are being referred to (The Ozzy 'thing' - and I don't go into FS2004, so I'll have to have a look).
But on the subject of the Forum becoming too serious. Hmmm.............now I do have to think here.
It may just be me, but I have noticed a couple of 'near misses' in terms of 'flame wars', which have been, in my opinion, possibly an indirect result of people who are relatively new to the Forum, tearing into a discussion, or tearing into a person, with the benefit of the 'longer standing' members being acquainted with this persons "way".
Some times I think people, in general, are too quick to 'copy' the style or manner in which others are relating, without being aware that it can take a little time before 'the regulars' are willing to accept such things as 'comical' or 'friendly banter', regardless of how many smilies or winkies you put after it.
It's a natural reaction to wanting to fit in. But then, maybe we should be more aware of this need.
I don't think it's been more 'serious'. There have been a number of new people arrive in the last couple of months and they are feeling thier way, and to a degree, so are we, in so far as we are not too sure about them, especially when it seems they might be..............for want of a better word...........too familiar and outspoken.
Oh God I'm sick. theirs a rotten flu going around 'Gods Country' at the moment.

Brensec-
The reason I posted this initially was because there had been a few incidents which had gotten WAY out of control.
I'm not going into details, because it's not worthy of reliving the experiences, but there were three incidents that I can think of. Some were newbie v. regular, some were regular v. newbie. In either case, the result was unacceptable behavior for ANY arena, be it electronic or face to face. It's just never right to act that way. (For the record, my response to one of the incidents-which I was made a part of-was also unacceptable, and I've taken responsibility for that.)
People, as a whole, need to lighten up and realize that some things are not meant as personal attacks (and admittedly, some are). If you receive a little bit of criticism, take it as a way of improving your methodology, and move forward.
However, if the result is a flame war, then by all means, let the mods know. I'm not one to go squealing about every little disagreement, but I've let them know about things more than once.
The mods can't be online 24/7. It's up to the rest of us to keep an eye on things, and if something SEVERE is happening, we need to let them know about it.
If we don't, SimV will be overridden with idiots, and those of us who are genuinely here to help will be lost to other sites.
God, I'm feeling longwinded today...'sup wit dat? lol

...I firmly believe now, that life is too short to waste any of it by getting upset with trivial matters that really make no difference in anyones life......
I may be the biggest joker on here, leaving "groaners" to many posts.......none are attacks and none are intended to be malicious.......its just the way I am......been a "class clown" since long after leaving school and still get a kick from bringing a smile to anyones face............

Why does everyone insist on life being "too short" for this, or "too short" for that? Life isn't short.

Ken,
Precisely my point. Since life is the longest thing you can possibly be a part of, make it as good as you can.

I know Rifle. You know my story.
But you'll never be able to convince a teenager that a year is a short time or that 40 isn't old or that the days, weeks and years will seem like they are flying by, one day.
They are all hanging out to get their drivers licenses, be old enough to drink and get into pubs etc, so everything to their way of thinking is very slow.
(I'm not necessarily saying that those that are proclaiming life as 'not short' are teenagers).

Life is too short. Hyperion is allowed his opinion but he is wrong. To understand the concept that at 29 You don't feel "29", you are simply you. Tell someone who is forty that they have a fatal condition. You will see a look in their eyes that says "Why me? I've hardly lived yet. There is so much I wanted to do..."
Then tell an 80 year old, I guarentee you will see the same look. Life is the longest thing you will ever do this is true.
But let's just say you have had a fantastic sex session with the most beautiful woman in the world. You've been going at it hammer and tongs for 24 hours straight. If finishes and you think, "wow, that was the longest session I've ever had. I wish it had been 48 hours."
Same concept guys.

Hey Smoke,
How's it feel to be a 'prize prawn'.
(It's an old Australian expression - Ozzy may be able to explain it, if you don't assume the meaning)
Hint: Prize Prawn = One who makes arse of one's self, without help from others.
